progress!!

Posted by alexandra_k on August 16, 2009, at 9:51:21

After two weeks of going to the gym (10 days)... I can lift twice the amount I could to start with. And I can now do nearly 2 and a half laps on the bike on setting 10 (5k laps) in 30 minutes. I've discovered endorphins. The last two days especially. Feeling the smokers lungs now... But having a few minutes of feeling 'in the zone'. Hypnotic... Rhythmic sounds of people on the treadmill, rhythmic breathing (for a while anyway), something certainly kicks in.

My leg hurt 'cause I thought it would help to set the weight further up my leg... But I shouldn't have. Did it properly today and no pain. Muscles have adapted so they don't hurt afterwards anymore (even though I'm pushing them to failure where the last lift simply won't go through with good form). Better with the smoking... But still not quit exactly... Need to throw them out of the house... First thing in the morning and in the evening is the hardest time. Will throw them away tomorrow.

But... The first / second year visiting students have discovered the gym too :-( So what used to be my own time away from it all... Now the place is riddled with about 5 other philosophy students :-( They are okay... Fairly much just doing their own thing... But the place doesn't feel like mine anymore.

I certainly have a better time of it when the place is nearly empty and people are just doing their own thing and are getting into that. It is a little hard to take the people who don't really work out, who seem to be there more interested in looking around, but I guess I can ignore them fairly much (so long as they don't set up shop on the bike next to me at any rate). I guess the visitors will go home soon (and even better the academic year will finish soon and all the undergrads will go home, too).

My work isn't going as well as I'd like... Guess most of my energy has been going into this :-/ Need to get back into things this week... But still, progress, I guess.

Have become self conscious (or self aware perhaps) about my weight for the first time... Trying to eat better... Will give that a couple weeks at any rate. See if exercise helps with that or if I need to take more drastic measures (like drinking less alcohol).

Wow Alex that's quite a feat all that weight. Good for you and muscle pain gone. The "runner's high" is great isn't it? Maybe the students are overwhelmed with all the equipment? Love Phillipa

That's amazing Alex! I made gains quickly too when I started exercising. It sure feels good doesn't it?
