Can restricting food intake lower mood?

Posted by Deneb on April 5, 2009, at 1:32:52

I've noticed this happening other times I've reduced my caloric intake to lose weight.

Ever since I went back on Weight Watchers I have gotten sad and lonely.

I am even crying.

I've been happy for a long time.

Now I am sad.

Am I missing something from my diet?

Deneb, you're also under a lot of stress right now, with your job and all. I remember you said your pdoc wasn't going to reduce your meds at this time, but maybe you need to increase some short term? It would be worth talking to her about it.

A lot of times when there is stress in my life, I feel like I'm handling it ok when I'm really not deep down, and it seeps out and bubbles up elsewhere. I think it's important for you to take special care of yourself at this time. Healthy but not excessive exercise, healthy but not extreme diet, making sure you're sleeping enough, and checking in with your pdoc about meds are all ways you can take good care of yourself.

Yes-it definitely can. I've read about "carb anger" (google it) for people dieting w/low carbs. Not sure if that is what you are doing with WW. When I switched to a 100% glutenfree diet to see if it helped my son, which entails eliminating most carbs though you can have rice, I felt awful and miserable. Not saying this is what's going on with you, but if you've reduced your carbs drastically, suddenly, it's not good for mood.

I've read carbs provide the precursors to seratonin, or something like that (not 100% sure); people crave carbs for mood, etc.

Hope you feel better soon :))

Yes, I believe it can lower mood. Also, I find myself sensitive to artificial sweetners. I know there are a lot of *diet* foods that are filled with them. Might be worth a try to cut out anything with artificial sweetners and see if you feel any difference. Feel better!

Although I am not purposely restricting carbs, I'm sure I am eating a lot fewer carbs.

I feel awful on low carb as well.

I am doing Weight Watchers. I am short and don't weigh a lot so my points are really low. I seem to do well on it if I pick healthy foods though.

My points target for each day is 18 points and I also get an extra 35 to spend as I wish.

I am eating healthier now. If I eat unhealthy foods I don't get to eat as much.

I take fish oil everyday and vitamin D.

I should exercise more, I was exercising at the Y, but now I quit the Y and haven't been exercising. Exercising helps me a lot. I should go outside on a nice day and go for a walk or something. Pdoc thinks going outside is good for me.

I stopped using sugar in my coffee a few years ago. I only use artificial sweeteners now. I was happy and eating them. I am using them more now. I put 4 packets of Splenda in my oatmeal and 4 in a large coffee.

I was using them a lot before I got sad though, that is probably not it.

Dark chocolate both good for you and ups the mood. Artificial sweeteners I'm allergic to. Love Phillipa

well, most evidence indicates calorie restrictions improve mood and socializing

people are complicated though so it might not work out that way all the time

but theres probably some way to manage it that you'll feel better
