Anyone know how to get rid of red wine stains?

Posted by Racer on November 11, 2008, at 22:29:57

On Election Night, at the local Obama Headquarters party, someone spilled red wine on my lovely white top! I tried all sorts of things I found on the internet, but haven't found anything that actually works. The top is cotton, a heavy jersey, and it has obviously already been worked on. {sigh}

So, does anyone have a magic red wine stain fix?

Thanks!

Hi Racer,

Have you tried OxiClean stain remover yet? That stuff really works! I've taken out wine stain by soaking it overnight in OxiClean. It's even taken out old pet stains from a white sofa. Hope it works for your stain, too.

Have you tried a mixture of dish washing liquid and hydrogen peroxide? For some reason 'Dawn' dish washing liquid seems to be named specifically for this mixture a lot on the internet - but I don't know whether brand actually matters. If you try it, let me know if it works. I've heard about this many times but have never tried it.

Loosen the satin with glycerine applied with a cotton ball until the edge of the stain begins to lighten. Make a paste with 1 desert spoon of bicarb and 2 desert spoons of vinegar and scrub into the stain. Wait until it stops fizzing then rub it off with a soft brush. Leave until the stain begins to disappear. Then wipe it off with a damp soapy sponge. Allow to dry.

This is adapted from the method for getting red wine stains off mattresses.
The material you are dealing with may be too fragile?
Could you keep it as a holy relic?
