Pdoc seems to lack social skills...or ???

Posted by fayeroe on November 7, 2008, at 18:10:50

I don't think that this is for Psychology or Meds.....

Twice when I have thanked my psychiatrist for his diagnosis and his work with me, he has said something that I find mildly annoying/upsetting/puzzled.

When he answers my "thank you"..he says "that is why I make so much money". The first time he said it to me I was mildly surprised..I passed it off to his young age..The second time, last visit, affected me more.

I see him in December and I may bring it up. I believe that a psychiatrist needs a better filter for conversations with a patient...who enables him to "make so much money."

I told a psychiatrist that she had issues with money. I was right too. I love getting one in on the docs.
I think your doc could use a simple you're welcome.

That would work! (nm) » Phil

Wow, talk about lack of tact! I think I would have to say, "Well I'm so happy my mental health issues are making you so very rich!" Or maybe, "Oh, that reminds me, I don't think I'll be able to pay my bill this time, you know how it is." Of course, he's probably attempting a joke, but you might want to let him know its in bad taste.

How about trying the Communist Manifesto out on him

'In proportion therefore as the repulsiveness of the work increases, the return decreases.'

which you may be able to confirm from your own experience.

How 'bout I kick him in the knee? He is only a few inches taller than me.

It is kinda funny today..it helped to tell you guys about it...but I do think it shows a lack of "grace". :-)

Sigismund, you devil. That is perfect for him. :-) Although he may be too young to get the connection with communism! He looks about 22.

Perhaps he feels uncomfortable with his income, given how recently he's out of school (?), and his joke is a defense against his own discomfort.

Or I think many professions have a set of standard jokes that they hear all the time. Some people coopt the jokes for themselves.

Either way, I agree it's inappropriate given that you are paying the big bucks. I think it's perfectly fair to point out that that it is difficult to those who are paying out the big bucks, sometimes at a high personal cost, to hear it spoken of so lightly. It's not necessary to do it in a confrontational manner, but if he's that young, he may need someone to point these things out.

Most clients are probably too nervous to say anything. I know my pdoc scares me witless and I'd never dream of saying anything to him, even those things I'd feel very free to tell my therapist.

I was in the grocery store this morning and it occurred to me what bothers me so much. Am I just a $ to him? A means to an end? wow....I am definitely going to gently tell him that it confuses me about his role in my mental health care. Are you are? Or are you ain't?

Thanks, Dinah

Sounds like he has issues about being thanked!!

Some people actually feel uncomfortable being thanked.

Once I was discussing something with DH. He was talking about some people who do work for him. They did a good job & I asked if he told them. He said No & when I asked why, he said he wouldn't want to make them feel uncomfortable!!!

LOL Okayyyyyyyyy.

My DH is pretty cool. He quietly listens to what I say & often quietly changes his behaviour if he thinks I have a good point.

I think what the dude said is quite inappropriate. I would feel really really upset if that happened to me - & I live in Canada, where we don't have to pay out of our pocket for psychiatrists (except in our taxes, I guess, which, I believe are some of the highest in the world!) sigh.

hugs to you. Are you feeling any better? You were having a really rough time there a while ago.

luv, Kath

Actually, I think the dear boy thinks he is quite funny. I wonder if he thinks that I will laugh uproariously, slap him on the butt and then leave to be mentally ill no more?

A joke in very poor taste! To my way of thinking.

Is it uncomfortable going to someone who is so young?

I am not uncomfortable with his age as he is a very good doctor.

I am going to bring it up in December. I don't hold doctors up as Gods, so I have no trouble talking to him about it.
