One thing seems to be missing here and thats P.M.A.

Whats P.M.A. it`s Positive Mental Attitude. I`ve gone through all the threads to the year 2000, and not once have I seen anything about Positive Mental Attittude.

Well I think its about time we started thinking this way, no more negativity, just positivity.

I know it sounds hard, but think about it, next time you`re feeling low, and I know because of what has happened in my life of late, you must think positive, things in life happen for a reason.
We should learn from these things so that we don`t make the same mistakes as others.

Example, do I do the dishes tonight or leave them till the morning.
Do them tonight,so that when I get up in the morning,it`s a fresh start to a new day.
Leave them to the morning and I get up thinking oh no I`ve got to do the dishes before I go to work.

So you see that being positive makes you feel better at the start of a new day.

I know lifes not easy, but we`re here so lets make the best of it whilst we can.

THINK P.M A. "POSITIVE MENTAL ATTITUDE"

you must think positive, things in life happen for a reason.

Yeah, but what they don't ever tell you is
that the *reason* is that sometimes life just sucks. :P

I know I failed PMA

Can we be positive about the fact that life (quite often) just sucks?

I think we can.

In the sense that it does not have to lead to destructiveness.

In the west we have unrealistic ideas about how we can affect the course of events.

Most of the important things in our lives happen by chance.

Quite by example, the contents of our guts are half (or something) bacteria, and their idea of what they are up to may not be ours and so on and so forth.

I see the PMA is starting to flow from me to you, because your giving positive answers, together we`ll do better and become better human beings.

As my brother who used to be in the Royal Navy once was told to repeat to himself every morning,

"F*ck it OK, I don`t have to put up with this sh*t anymore. Look after myself.

I agree, and what a thought provoking post.
I have felt that the idea of "there's a reason for this happening to me in my life" is actually an indulgent western and anthrocentric view. Especially when considering the atrocities that people are subject to.

I saw Oprah interviewing Eli Weisel years ago, and I'll never forget his reaction when she asked
"But do you believe that there was a reason that you were chosen for this, that you were saved from the Holocaust to tell the tale perhaps?" (Oprah I love you, but you fall for **every single one **of those pink and green cushy covered books of comfort and spirituality)

I could tell that Weisel was trying to maintain his composure, and he very firmly said "NO There were far better people than I who could have been saved" End of that topic right there.

In another documentary. He also said "If God had a plan for the holocaust then I no longer have a God"

I think finding meaning in what has happened is the gift, but it's a very personal journey.

Wow I really went off on a tangent..
Sorry.

Primo Levi had a different line, although he may have been depressed (whatever that is) when he wrote it. It was 'the best all died, the worst survived'.
(Nice and cheery. Still, he's a wonderful writer.)

There are assumptions embeded in our culture that it is hard to think outside of. Some that come to mind involve choice, autonomy, and the meaning (or lack therof) of history.

Yes, it's seldom that a cheerful writer is a good one, or.. oh, I didn't mean that as snottily as it sounded, so could you just rework that in your head so I don't sound like a pretentious twit, I don't have the energy. Thanks, : )

I'm all for deconstruction, and conscious action, because that's how positive change occurs, over time.. a long long time.. :{
But when you're questioning and rejecting many of your own cultures comfortable assumptions, it can sure leave you in an emotional exile..
Or maybe that's depression too.

Although I guess, compared to the likes of Copernicus, and Joan of Arc my pondering over a cup of coffee is downright cushy

I don't mind being snooty.

>it's seldom that a cheerful writer is a good one

All my favourite writers.......they're not neccessarily bleak, but if they're not bleak they're unsettling.

I was thinking about the idea of a life without consolations. Some people might prefer to have consolations, but for some reason can't or won't allow them. The pleasures of self-discipline?
