My hovercraft is full of eels

Posted by Sigismund on June 21, 2008, at 23:30:59

(This comes from a Greek/English phrase book.)

What I wanted to know (well, I didn't really, I just wanted to talk) is.....
where is the water that is causing floods of 'biblical proportions' in Iowa coming from?

But if you don't want to talk about that you can talk about anything you like.
And, should I have used a capital B for 'biblical'?

Not sure if you really do want to know, but that would be from the Mississippi and Des Moines rivers. Maybe the Missouri, too, I'm not sure...

Way, way too much rain in too short a time. Overflowing their banks and breaching/breaking levees.

Biblical. hmmm...usually capitalized, perhaps out of respect for the root word...?

But I don't mind if you do or you don't, myself ;-) I'm working on guarding my mind against a kind of reflexive legalism in my thinking, which I am prone to, from time to time... not a useful habit for open communication, that. So write your words however...just glad you are here to write them and we are here to receive :-)

PS - Me - I think my rowboat is full of guppies. (surely I missed the point/humor and so please, feel free to ignore some or all of this....)

...if we were having a Babble contest for the coolest, most unique, interesting subject lines, well, this thread would be a serious contender! :-)

(It sucked me in, after all, and I generally resist sucking....now, now...behave, everyone)

Strange how some of those Biblical preachers aren't blaming the Iowa floods on sin like they did for New Orleans.

Sorry.

hi sig,

I've nothing particular to say myself, but since you want to talk....
I don't think you have to capitalize "bible"
you know it's funny, me being an atheist and all, but being raised as a serious catholic (catholic school and all with all the rituals and ceremony) I still have to capitalize the word "God"
and it's not simply about the proper way you're supposed to do it, it's that I will feel bad if I don't, I guess it is about respect even for something I don't believe in but is so important for so many and such a huge concept.

what else should we capitalize??
I think "Gas", as in petrol

but moving on...
eels in a hovercraft...I don't know what to make of that
I was at the beach however yesterday in the ocean and I kept imagining eels in the water- there is no way that there would be any eels in this particular water, but oh well there I was standing in the ocean with a heck of a lot of seaweed, I mean there were masses of it floating together, and I was imagining eels...I guess it was the slimy seaweed texture

do you ever have those types of dreams where you are driving your car and it's out of control or you can't stop it?
I had one recently where I was driving from the backseat somehow, couldn't see where I was going except for flashes, and was sure that at any moment I would crash, I was also apparently driving on a road precariously close to the ocean during a storm and the wind and surf was knocking stuff around, if I had a hovercraft perhaps things would have been different

yeah it is capitalized..........

but you don't have to capitalize it if referring to something like the "birdwatcher's bible" or something like that

We had the coolest summer for 50 years and then, until now, no winter, it was so warm...although this morning is cool. I thought our planetary abuse may have triggered some melt down of all that snow that presumably still falls in the Rockies. (Do any of you feel like this is the beginning of the end of the world? I used not to think so.) So, anyway, I'd blame all that water on someone or other, but it is too early in the morning to have any idea of who (whom?), consistent with my own behaviour and with some coherent version of reality. I wrote to Verne and he's not replied. Perhaps he's been evacuated? It's interesting you have all these rivers. Our rivers don't get to the sea because we have used them all up before they get there. As a consequence there are areas of the river bed where the soil has become as dangerous to touch as battery acid (acid sulphate soil), the reasons for which I have heard but can't recall. The best line I heard on atheists recently is "Contemporary atheism is a Christian heresy that differs from earlier heresies chiefly in its intellectual crudity" (watch out sid) I used to have dreams about taking off in a light plane I didn't know how to fly (but I made it!!) and now I had to land the bloody thing.

Thankyouse

The Colorado River no longer reaches the sea... that's the main one I know of in the US.

Thanks to the miracle of the Internets you can now say "my hovercraft is full of eels" in multiple languages: http://www.omniglot.com/language/phrases/hovercraft.htm

Flying Dreams are supposed to mean good things. When I was a kid I used to fly off my children's log cabin in the back yard . It was fun I'd like to do it again but it was a darned dream!!!!! Love PJ

Hi Sigismund,

My husband can say it in Spanish. Talk about the weird looks we got in Mexico while boarding a tour boat.
