Look

Posted by Sigismund on June 3, 2008, at 2:28:39

No one seems to post here that much (is 'that much' OK? Should we be saying 'so much'?) here anymore (is that one word or two? I wasn't even sure that 'no one' was 'no one' rather than 'noone', but I won't go any further into my uncertainties.)

So I have a question.

Is Puerto Rico part of the USA?

If so, why and how? And where (exactly) is it?

If not, why have Democrat primaries just been held there?

hey sigi,

I'm going to fill you in on all the sketchy details I remember from a NYTimes story I read last week.

1) puerto rico is a US territory.
2) p.r.'s inhabitants hold US citizenship
3) p.r.'s inhabitants cannot vote in the main election
4) p.r.'s inhabitants are not subject to federal income tax
5) p.r.'s political leanings vacillate between desiring statehood, with full rights and responsibilities, and desiring to remain a quasi-independent state under self-government, under the protective/destructive umbrella of the USA.
6) p.r.'s political parties (there are 2 main ones) do not correspond at all to USA's democrats and republicans. One party leans strongly towards independence, the other one towards statehood.
7) democratic candidates are courting members of both parties, so they have to be careful how they handle the issue of independence.
8) puerto rico is an island in the Caribbean, and is located East of the Dominican republic. It's too far to take a canoe from Florida (mainland) to P.R.
9)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puerto_Rico
10) the main language is Spanish
11) The food in P.R is yummy
12) llurpsie went there once as part of her cruise adventures. it was very busy in San Juan, and she was scared of missing her boat.

13) no one

i can't help but notice that you seemed to have (ok, i think that is really wrong in some sort of grammar rules, but i can't think straight right now anyway, especially if someone is infringing on the 'kk copywrited style of writing') used quite a few parenthesis (oh dear, i know that's wrong, but i'm too lazy to look up the correct spelling anyway. if you say it like it's spelled, you'll know what i'm talking about), secondguessed your sentence structure, and there was something else i fear you swiped from me, but i can't remember. of course, i could fault you for not knowing the usa and it's whereabouts, but i don't know it either... AH, so you swiped lack of geography from me as well!!!

i expect all sorts of lovin, money, and especially money for this 'kk style of writing copywqirted infringment...

did that come out right?

>are you turning into me or what?

That sounds like a good idea. But what will you do then?

Thank you, everyone for your helpful and informative replies.

I'd imagined it was down near Panama.

San Felipe del Moro runs nicely off the tongue, you think?
(Spanish has such an agreeable melancholy.)

'a territory appurtenant and belonging to the United States, but not a part of the United States'.......well, that sorts that out.

We recently rewatched "The Exterminating Angel" but the Spanish in the film was harsh just like the people. But what I did not expect was it to be so funny. It's about (if you don't already know) these people who come back after the theatre to a (big) house (perhaps in Barcelona?) for a little bit more of a recital, drinks and coffee before going home, but they all end up trapped in the room unable to leave. Everyone speaks nonsense like 'The lower orders do not feel pain like we do' and 'Let me show you my incunabula' or 'where's the morphine?', but in particular (naturally) they spend a bit of time talking about how it can be that they cannot get out of this room when there is nothing to stop them, and which is worse (as they often remark) they are unable even to try to leave.

Then I realised that Todd Solondz must have got some of the ideas for his magnificent black farces from Bunuel.

I'll have to get out "The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie".

I missed it when it came out in 1972 or whenever it was.

I'm ashamed to say that all I've ever learned about relations between Puerto Rico and the United States was what I could glean from repeatedly watching "West Side Story".

I gather that things have improved since then?

FYI, use of the word "Democrat" as anything other than a noun (meaning a person who is a member of or identifies with the Democratic party) is, in the US, frequently used as a mild slur by conservatives. Google "democrat versus democratic" and you should see what I mean.

I do know, of course, that you had no intention whatsoever of slipping into that...

Other US territories have held Democratic primaries - American Samoa, Guam... The parties are largely free to set the rules for determining their nominees, and there are significant differences, one of which is how they handle territories. Overall, I think the Republican rules resemble the way the November election more closely than the Demoracts' system.

Well, I know what you mean.

The little (mas pequeno?) I know about Puerto Rico comes from Rolling Stones songs.
