My dog is making me miserable!!!

Posted by kimmykat75 on April 1, 2008, at 20:25:39

I have an eight year old corgi and I have a love/hate relationship with her. She won't let me walk out the door without trying to attack me. She gets exercise, attention and discipline but nothing seems to work on this problem! Does anyone have any experience and suggestions on this?????

Corgis are cattle dogs. Does she attack your ankles? She might be trying to drive you where she wants you to go. Back inside. And in the way her ancestors have done for years.

Is there a local obedience club where you are? Or a really good training class? Did you get her from a breeder? Good involved breeders are always willing to help, even eight years later.

I also find watching the Dog Whisperer to be instructive, although you probably have to be pretty confident and competent to use his methods.

There are also less behavior oriented fixes. Can you confine her when you're about to leave the house?

I always thought corgis were rated as excellent pets even with children? Aren't they from England? Phlllipa

Kimmycat I see by the green flag that you are new to babble. Let me welcome you and there is a host of other boards to choose from. Phillipa

I wouldn't trust my Corgi with children...she likes to herd! They originated in England, however, I got mine from a pet store...that could be part of the problem.

Even though you bought her from a pet store, you ought to do a search for the national breed club. A local breeder, or the breed rescue society, would probably be delighted to help you as best they can.

At the very least, they can probably aim you in the right direction.

I had to use a control collar on my dog. He is in the bully breed. I only had to use it 2x for running off and he hasn't ever tried to do it again. I tested it on myself. There is also a vibrate button on it.

Dogs want to get to the face. They do that with other dogs.

Also, they get very excited to go for a walk.

I have to use a prong collar with my strong dog.

It has made all the difference in the world.

I would really like to teach him and my other dog how to pull a little wagon to get more exercise. :)
