to look for some backup, I hope....

I contend even the most casual computer user IS aware of search engines. Google, in particular, is, arguably, the most popular - their stock prices bear that out also. Also, I have seen this evidenced by someone posting something like: "I typed in so and so and found this site...." My *assumption* is the typing of so and so WAS into some search engine. Heck, these pages have a big ole handy dandy typeable area, big as can be, to search this site or the www. There's even a specific link for archives.

I have always used search engines to find info on the 'net, otherwise I think I would be sitting in front of a humming computer with not doing much (probably a better idea, actually - smile).... that's just me, I guess.

Point being, I believe folks can look up stuff on their own and are aware and are capable of this.

Wikipedia's site spells out it IS editable, with a few exceptions. Thus, it's "wiki".

Babblemail is a feature on this site and is a choice even at first register. Changes can be made without too much hassle and the directions are pretty clear cut to me. Alot of message boards have an option for private exchanges. They may work a bit differently but I think if you've been around message boards a brief time, it's mainly not difficult to figure out.

I'm going back to my hidey hole now....

Funny how this was redirected from meds without a redirect post. Is this common? I for one and a lot I've read posts from didn't for some reason know what babblemail is and had to explain it. Also I think sticking with med approved sites provides clear and accurate information. I usually use the first on google as it's usually the official drug site. Id say the info on those sites is accurate. And believe it or not until it was explained how I did not know how to google. Phillipa the computer dummy.

Google GDrive is not a rumor

An interesting article by Greg Linden points to some slide comments from Google's Analyst Day Power Point presentation last week. The presentation was removed from Google's website but the text is still available in Greg's post. These notes clearly state efforts have been put towards "infinite storage" in terms of GDrive. In September I ran across compelling evidence that suggests a product by this name was either in the works, or at least being considered — at that time it was nothing more than speculation. Now, according to these notes it isn't far from reality.

"With infinite storage, we can house all user files, including: emails, web history, pictures, bookmarks, etc and make it accessible from anywhere (any device, any platform, etc). We already have efforts in this direction in terms of GDrive, GDS, Lighthouse, but all of them face bandwidth and storage constraints today." — excerpt from Analyst Day presentation notes.

The GDrive service will provide anyone (who trusts Google with their data) a universally accessible network share that spans across computers, operating systems and even devices. Users will no longer require third party applications to emulate this behaviour by abusing Gmail storage.

In a Windows environment, most users know how to use the typical C: in "My Computer". Network drives work exactly the same but are given a different letter and the files within are not stored on the computer. If my suspicions are correct and GDrive is simply a network share, most applications could take advantage of this service without modification.

The question of course is how Google will monetize a service like this. I cannot see how file storage using a network share could be used to serve up advertisements — so maybe they won't. In some screenshots of Gmail for domains, it appears there are different "account plans" that I assume provide additional email addresses. Could a similar system work for online storage? For example, 1GB free and pay $5 for each additional.

Another way to generate income from this service would be to provide users a DVD backup of their data for a small monthly fee. Depending on how often a GDrive is used by someone, it could make sense to receive a backup on a regular schedule — while they are at it, why not include some "cool" extras on those DVD's?

Online storage with GDrive could be an important part of Google's future plans — universal access to your data will soon become reality.

Jay since seriously I know nothing but how to google and do chat boards and not well. Does this mean that soon all personal info in a persons computer can be accessed? Like the pics or e-mails I sometimes save or the addresses of family and friends? You must work in computers or I'm stupieder than I thought I was. This sounds foreign to me as remember I'm older than you. What about people who do their banking on line etc. I don't my husband does and pays bills that way? Thanks Phillipa the jerk.

Oh Phillipa...you are not a "jerk"...that is reserved for me. :-) I don't know a lot about computers either, but basically, and remember only people who subscribe to this GDrive thing will have this, but if you subscribe, you could put all of your programs, media, etc. in your computer on the GDrive. It wouldn't matter if you had a Mac, or just a PC, you could do this. I think people who don't participate will not be affected. But, the GDrive thing sounds like a hacker's dream, as just exactly how much security could Goggle provide?

So...I am still technically clueless, but I think I sort-of got it. Hope that helps..
Jay

It's not common, but we do it sometimes. If you'd like to post a link to Medication to your redirected post here, that would be fine.

Dr. Bob I was much more curious how it could be redirected without a link. Thanks for the question answered. Phillipa
