Supervisor woes

Posted by Jamal Spelling on September 17, 2007, at 4:11:10

I feel so unbelievaby angry with my thesis supervisor. I schedule an appointment with him for say 14:00. I show up at his office to find a note on his door saying

"Gone to library...Be back in 5 minutes".

Eventually, he shows up only at 14:45!

This kind of thing happens ALL THE TIME!

He double-books, even triple-books my appointments, ALL THE TIME.

He's always late, sometimes he doesn't even show up for our meetings!

He tells me he isn't satisfied with my research progress, yet when I send him text with my latest work, he doesn't even bother to read it!

The other day, I emailed him 8 pages of text with research of mine that I wanted to discuss. In the email, I specifically requested a meeting to discuss this latest work of mine. So I show up at his office, and he starts by saying: "So why did you want to see me?" He didn't even bother to read my work! And then he has the cheek to tell me I'm "idling" and I have to work harder!

He'll ask me: "So what's the current status on XYZ". Meanwhile, I resolved XYZ months ago already, and told him so on several occasions!

He's not stupid, nor incompetent. He just doesn't take my studies seriously. My career is on the line here, but he just doesn't care! I'm stuck with him for the remainder of my studies, because it is simply too cimplicated to change supervisor at this stage.

I feel like I want to scream!

Jamal,

You need to sit down with him and look him straight in the eyes and tactfully tell him, for example; "I know that you are a very busy and your position demands a great deal of your time for students concerns outside of class etc.. but, I take my studies seriously, and value your input and any constructive critisism to help me become a better student and grasp the topic, ect.. You are expressing to him that you want your feeling validated, and by doing this, he will take you seriously and respect you and where you are coming from. I hope this helps.
