Yeah I did at first too Phillipa, but it looks like it has fruit in the middle, so it's one of those other things.
I had Poore Bros. kettle cooked potato chips and Klondike Heath bars last night!

>I made a whole mess'a buttertarts in Summer 2006. Some of them had raisins in the middle. Inspired by Larry Hoover's buttertart posts, and living far from the Canadian border, I downloaded the recipe. With help from him and other kind Canadians (are there unkind Canadians?!?) I was able to refine the recipe until it was 99% fattening and 100% delicious.
Imagine my delight when I went to Canada for a conference last year and got to eat the REAL buttertart... mine was just as good, even better 'cause it was fresh and homemade.

Bah! Bah! Bahhhhhhh!
OMG, 5f's turned into a sheep, or, or is she two sheep?
I knew she was angry last night. She was swinging her satin pillows and yelling 'Don't even get close to my corner!'.
I once saw her nearly kick a man to death when he tried to get in that damn corner.
Then she was mumbling in her sleep last night something like 'butt, or tarts, or a noodle'?
She's such an emotional creature and now she's turned into one! Ha Ha!
I'm afraid she might bite me.
I have to go get her an, an 'ice cream man'? I don't know where to buy ice cream men!
Ouch!! She got me foot!!!
You seem like such nice people. I don't know what you see in her!
That smarts!
I'll sign her name like I always do.
She's so wrapped up in herself she doesn't even notice, and now she's wrapped up pretty warm too! HA HA!
5f (Don't tell her!)

I just mosied (sp?) on over here from Admin after noticing the pretty new picture and wondering as to the nature of the object! Some kindly folks explained it was a Canadian delicacy - a butter tart - and gave me the link to this thread. I wasn't at the Canadian conf so I've never tasted one in real life but it looks good and I just LOVE buttermilk pie. Is it something like buttermilk pie?
Is there a recipe that can be obtained? Or is it sort've like an old secret family recipe? <grin> I think I'm going to stop by Kroger on my home this afternoon and see if they have any buttmilk pies ....

U mean that's a buttertar in the pic?
OMG! You show us a picture, you tell us how they're delighting your palates, and then you sit back w/ those smirks on your faces while we grovel at your feet.
In the name of 'democracy everywhere', will you please just share the freakin' recipe or get a dang patent, or 'don't let the door hit .... never mind'.
This is torture. I'm Jonesin' for a stupid cookie! (Where did the word Jonesin' come from anyway? Is it a real word? I know it's a real feeling cuz' it's so bad I'm too anxious to look it up!)
Bah!

I'm sure it's in the archives somewhere.
This is the recipe that I used to make the ones in the picture
http://www.joyofbaking.com/ButterTarts.html
note the abundance of real butter. Sometimes I used raisins, but I didn't have any nuts handy. Except the crazy-nut, known affectionately (occasionally) as llurpsieNoodle.
Also please note that I just spent 20 minutes working out on the Bowflex. That means that I'm ripped. If I ran around the block a time or two, I might be able to eat a buttertart.
best to you 5f, you crack me up (I'm already cracked anyways, but you know what I mean...)

There ya go, Lonely! Now maybe I've stirred enough outrage and butter tart loyalty to bring forth an answer as to whether butter tarts are anything like buttermilk pie (or anything that can be had off the shelf at Kroger!).
But that is wisdom I do not have myself. Lonely, what is buttermilk pie like anyway? Somehow I think I can envision and en-taste it already, and it's getting a big thumbs up from me! Layers of beige are *always* fine by me. Beige usually tastes a little TOO good, whether sweet or salty! :)

Oh, yum, buttermilk pie is, well, how can I explain it? It's more rich than a custard pie but does not taste like buttermilk (which I don't like). I think a restauranteer in San Antonio gave my hubby a recipe for buttermilk pie about 25 years ago - not sure where it is. As I recall, it wasn't that hard to make but used something like a pound (or more depending on how many pies) of butter (real) and I think buttermilk plus sugar. It was really quite simple (except for crust which can be purchased commercially) but tasted like something that must be very challenging to create. I have bought two in the bakery area at Kroger in the past month. Guess that's why I look at these butter tarts with salivary lust. Sure hope it's not a state secret!!!

Yipee! I've got it, I've finally got it! Looks fairly complicated to make but also sounds DELICIOUS!
Re the buttermilk pie - turns out I had it typed in w/other recipes on my hard disk. It takes 5 Tablespoons ww flour, 4-1/2 cup sugar
1 pound margarine melted, 2 tablespoons vanilla, 10 eggs,
4-1/2 cup buttermilkAt least that's the version we have and it is RICH !!! The butter tarts sound similar but the buttermilk pie doesn't have the nuts or raisins. I think of tarts as being more "dressy" or tea time ... elegant, I guess.
Thank you!

>Wow Lonely, you're actually managing to get ME excited at the thought of baking something (or spending longer in the kitchen than it takes to pop something in the microwave or grab something ready-made outta da 'fridge!)! Your enthusiasm is infectious!
And about that buttermilk pie recipe above -- ha ha silly me, once again I see that assuming something is more complicated than it is has lead me to miss out on one of life's great pleasures. Here I would have thought I'd have to go to ridiculous lengths, like removing the shells from the eggs or baking the thing!! Perfect, I'm going to serve this to company tonight. Won't they be surprised!
(Hehe just kidding, I *think* I can figure out the rest, but sadly it will probably require reference materials!)
Let me know how your first batch of butter tarts turns out! (By the way, when I look at that photo, I keep seeing a tart-shaped candle holder, due to the raisin "wick" right in the center! :)

Well, I am lucky to have a ready supply, from the inimitable Betty's Tarts, supplier to Babblefest 2005. Although insufficient to fuel comments to a thread I started.
I wish I had the energy to try the various recipes.....to see if any of them hold a candle to Betty's. I offered her a lot of money for her recipe, and she just laughed.
Glad you have that memory, 10der.
