Need a 'car mechanic's' advice

Posted by Fivefires on June 18, 2007, at 23:29:35

After my car is warmed up, it 'halts and dies' as I slow to a stop sign or light.

A service station has told me I need to pay $400 to have a lock out solenoid replaced.

Is this something one could do at home in their own garage.

What does this solenoid look like?

If any1 could direct me to a website, appreciate it.

The Chilton manual for my '94 Chevy Cavalier RS gives no info for my 'automatic transmission'. It only gives info for manuals.

Tks u all, Take care,

Can't you let the mechanic fix it? I have no idea. Love Phillipa

I did a quick google, and got a bunch of hits about repairs for Cavaliers. This one has a diagnostic option, the second question down:

http://www.2carpros.com/makes/chevy/cavalier2.htm

This has instructions:

http://autorepair.about.com/cs/doityourself/l/aa011703a.htm

If you check these out, and maybe run your own search for other relevant sites, you should get an idea of whether you want to attempt it yourself.

I will warn you, though: sometimes there are little details left out. For example, I tried to replace the brake rotors on my '82 Tercel once, only to find that you needed to disassemble most of the bottom end to do it...

I hope that helps.

we still have an expedition in the garage from some time around thanksgiving waiting to be put back together. (don't attempt a heater core ever!)

beware of silly brother-in-laws who are know-it-alls, even with 'the book' on the vehicles...

seriously!

Tks you guys.

I've sent the sites to my mechanic/daughter and mechanic/ex-husband Racer. Great search. I'd googled the first one, but wasn't able to narrow it down w/ correct wording as you must have. Second site very good.

If they're unable to help me, will have to 'charge it'; bad scene!
