Politics Of Apartment Neighbors

Posted by TheMeanReds on March 23, 2007, at 12:46:35

My downstairs neighbor had a medical marijuana card. And he is legally able to grow a certain amount in his home. This is for an incurable disease.

The airflow gets into my apartment. I have developed an allergy to marijuana. The smell makes me itch all over.

But I suppose the itchiness I can deal with. Im not the one with an incurable disease, and in immense pain.

I think he might be growing more than allowed, because of the presence of the smell is so prominent in my place. And late night visitors laughing and laughing.

I suppose I will be completely passive. Buy some Claritin. Just needed to 'vent' alittle.

Sad as it is that he's sick, if the noise and smell are affecting you, you can -- and should -- speak to him about it. The noise issue might depend on how late it's going on, but it's still an issue. The smell -- well, frankly, no matter how sick he is or what he's sick with, the feds don't recognize the right to marijuana. While you might not have a problem with it, he should still know that the smell is getting out. Other people might be less inclined to sniff the other way. You'd be doing him a favor by letting him know, so he can avoid someone else calling the authorities.

High density living can be problematic. I'm on the board of directors for our homeowners' association, and we have to mediate some disputes between condo owners. It can be worse than dealing with six year olds. Not to mention the pin-pricks of annoyance that don't make it to the board. Things like our next door neighbors, having parties until 3AM, blasting their stereo. Things like that, which we try to deal with between ourselves, rather than taking it to the board.

Ugh. I feel for you. Good luck.

Thanks for the insight. I used to assistant manage these apartments. I actually leased the apartment to him. He is not a bad person. I can get him evicted at the drop of a hat. My former boss (on site manager) comes over and visits with my rommate on weekends.

Once, while I was pretty wild with untreated Biploar. I knocked on his door. He said 'come in!'. I walked in (pretty bold). I asked if I could buy an 1/8 bag. He said 'alright' and then I said 'JUST KIDDING!'. And walked out.

So he knows that I know. But I'm embarassed to go down and knock again, because now I have a conscence about the past rudeness. Plus thinking about it makes me anxious.

Maybe I should drink a couple glasses of wine. Go down with a little makeup, bat my eyes, and ask him if we could come to terms with this thing. Because I really do have empathy for him now.

Tell him the smell is getting out and he needs to install a carbon filter.
You shouldn't have to smell skunk while at home.

What about marinol the marijuana med? Do they still have that? And Lar in Candada had some that comes in food you don't smoke. Tough and sad situation. Where are you located? Laws are different for different stated and countries for medicinal purposes. With a docs script. Sorry you have this problem and it is a sad problem. Love Phillipa

I live in Portland, Oregon. Which could be described as a cross between San Fransico and Seattle. So people are pretty liberal here.

Medical marijuana cards, which is basically a presciption card, are readily available from docs here. Someone gets a medical marijuana card, and some are legally allowed to grow a certain amount in thier home. This is for their own use, and sometimes legal to deal it out to other card holders.

I definately do not want to call the police, because he is not harming anyone by selling (illegally) to adults on the side. I smoked marijuana while a teen, and know the 'culture' of marijuana users. 99% of the time they are not out to hurt anyone.

I probably will not suggest another form of marijuana to treat his pain, because I dont want to try to change his basic way of life.

Thanks for responding. =)

Apartments are tricky. I mean people have a right to do what they want in their own home, but -wow- what if it that affects the people around them.

But I do think you are right to try to reach a solution that will make you more comfortable.

I did run into a situation similar to this with a neighbor and we did get it resolved.

I smoke. So I was just happily smoking away in my apartment and had no idea that the smoke was seeping into the apartment above me.

My neighbor finally came down and told me, but only after her anger had reached a fevered pitch.

Keep in mind I had no idea that this was happening. I wish she had told me sooner!

The way we resolved it was that we split the cost for air purifiers, filters and other techniques to keep the air in both of our apartments clear.

We just worked in the situation we had, and both of us got what we wanted.

So, have a few sips of wine, come up with a solution that would work for you both and try to catch him when he isn't high.

People are much more willing to work with you if you don't just say "I have a problem with you and what are you going to do about it".

Your story is very inspiring. Its great that you kept your cool, even when barked at for something you had never thought affected your neighbor.

And the solution was very harmonious. Its sounds as though some of your empathy towards her, gave her empathy towards you as well. Thanks for sharing your experience. =)

I'm pretty sure I'm going to be moving in 30 days. I found a great apartment complex. It has a full gym (I cant afford a gym membership). And its next to some little shops I like to go to. Also near public transportation, as I dont have a car right now.

So now Im so excited, Im just forgetting about the whole neighbor thing. I cant wait to move.

Yay!!!
