How do I get rid of a little ratty friend?

Posted by Jo U.K on January 30, 2007, at 2:53:30

Last night me and the kids were watching tv, whenI heard a gnawing sound coming from INSIDE the wall behind me. We muted the TV, yep, there it was again, this time coming from the ceiling, near to where it joins the wall. It was FREAKY! I went up in the attic with a torch(I live in a bungalow)but nothing moving up there. I looked outside and I could still hear it coming from in the wall. I didnt have a clue what to do so I took the logical option -and decided to ignore it. Later, my daughter went outside to feed her pet rabbit and saw a blinkin RAT crawl under the lip of the render that covers my house and into the wall. Aaaaaarrrrgggghh. What can I do?? The lip goes all the way round the house! I'm too scared to poke around with my hand to see if theres a hole. I couldnt sleep for thinking about it. Plus, I binged on sugar yesterday so I feel sick and headachy today. I am SO creeped out.

Call the local council? I think they're supposed to deal with stuff like that. Although I think it used to be free, but they've started charging for it now or something but anyway they'd know what to do. Grrrr. I hate council tax!

You mean you don't have to get your own traps? Someone does it for you? Love Phillipa

Yes, it's a Health and Safety thing - rats aren't good for public health.

I phoned the council to get someone to get rid of the mice in my house (all 2 of them, but still), they set traps and found the hole they'd been coming through in the top floor of the house from next door. Our neighbours must've had them throughout their house for them to be that high up - yuk!

Yep the council do if for you, but don't forget we pay AT LEAST £120/$200 per month for council tax. Thats charged per house. Its actually quite alot and then don't forget we pay aload of income tax too. Anyway, the council take away your trash too. And what else do they do? I don't know. Its I guess a 'community tax'.

Oh well.

Get a cat? My cat caught a rat once. Eek. Composting bins are an attraction too, so make sure its vermin proof.

So true, and they're goign to start charging for trash soon by the sounds of it (to increase recycling). The council maintain parks and public buildings, sweep the streets, issue parking tickets, deal with planning permission etc - good and bad I guess, but we pay massess for it

Thanks guys, we didnt hear it last night, but I suppose that doesnt mean its gone. I think its the pet rabbit outside that its hanging around, lookin for food. The rabbit cage and run is vermin proof(though they've had a good go at chewing through the floor). I have two labrador retrievers who would enjoy chasing the rat around but they are not as good as terriers. Sadly, my husband wont let me have another dog. I might call the exterminator, but I dont think he can put poison down just incase my dogs eat the poisoned dead rat which can then harm them. I heard a Jack Russell died that way. I just hope the darn thing doesnt make a nest in the wall. Can you imagine that?? I'm all for live and let live in the great outdoors, but NOT in my house!
