Reformed packrats--how to declutter?

Posted by DannaB on December 27, 2006, at 22:58:43

If you've seen my other messages, you may know that I'm in the process of moving (we're *almost* done). Somehow I just can't understand how I have so much STUFF. I have lived in a studio (one-room) apartment for five years. So how is it possible that I have SO many clothes, SO many socks, SO many of this that and the other thing?

I was raised by a clan of serious packrats (a sibling is a hoarder) and compared to them I have a lot less stuff. Even though I'm able to get rid of things, I think I get into trouble when I'm shopping. Even with food shopping, I always buy too much and end up having to throw things away.

Are any of you reformed packrats? I grew up poor, so part of where this comes from is that I buy things on sale or will keep multiples so that I won't have to buy one when the other runs out. But when I try to figure out how to minimize, it's hard for me to figure out what needs to go. For example, I have A LOT of socks. But eventually socks get holes and need to be replaced. Should I get rid of socks now and have to spend money later?

I find it easier to donate things than to throw them away. Of course I'm talking about usable things. Socks with no holes and that match and food that hasn't expired. Extra books to a book sale or used book store.

Start with just one thing like your sock drawer or the food pantry. The hard part is fighting to KEEP that space neat and less cluttered.

Put a date on all your food either when you buy it or when you open it. Or cicle the use by date on the item. I, too, buy multiples. Just be sure to put the newest item in the back. Rotate the stock!

I'm much less good at throwing away sentimental items. Sigh...

Hi DannaB,

You are discussing one of my favorite subjects. I AM a recovering clutterbug. Books and internet resources actually helped me alot. I realized mine had to do with learned behavior and control issues. The problem was, my suff started to control me rather than the other way around. I had to start small and go slowly but I found decluttering my environment was REALLY REALLY helpful for me. It did require a paradyme change and for me, it needed to become a new "lifestyle".

I have not regretted anything I've tossed or donated despite thinking I may be making a horrible mistake when I began the process. Decluttering is very freeing.

Good Luck to you.

I agree I either throw away or give away. Why do I need things I haven't worn in years? As far as food is concerned we eat mostly perisables. So no problem there. I'm not a packrat my husband is. Love Phillipa

I'm a recovering packrat. I made a few major purges over the years but the real key for me is buying less stuff.

Danna - I am a confirmed packrat so I'd say keep the socks.

I tidied my underwear drawer in the summer & I think I had - I think it was about 70 or more pairs of underpants!! Oh My God.

I am in the process of trying to simplify my life & get rid of things I don't LOVE. However, I think I only got rid of a couple of pairs of undies! LOL

Good luck, Kath
