I dreamed I was there in Bipolar Heaven

Posted by Lou Pilder on November 3, 2006, at 7:50:09

Friends,
I dreamed I was there in Bipolar Heaven, what a wonderful night.
There was Ludwig von Beethoven playing "Fur Elise" on the piano and there were great theaters each with the masterpieces being played by Sergey Rachmaninoff, George Fredrich Handel, Tchaikovsky,Robert Schumann,Frederic Chopin and others.
As I walked over a hill a met a man painting the stary night. It was Vincent Van Gogh. Then a man came up to me and said, 'Lou, never give up." And Then I met Abe Lincoln. I said to him that there is a government of the people, by the people and for the people. Then came F.Scott Fitzgerald. I told him that I saw the movie, "The Great Gatzby". Then I came to a theater and a lady was singing to a large crowd. It was Tammy Wynett singing, "Stand By Your Man."
Then a Rider on a White Horse stopped by me and handed ma a book that was titled, Those That Will be Comming Here." I opened the book to the first page and saw the names.

Friends,
I saw the man again that said to me,"Lou,Never give up." It was Winston Churchill and I asked him how he knew my name. He said, "Every one up here knows you, Lou. You are giving us a good name."

Nice.

And F Scott Fitzgerald would have been even happier if you'd told him you'd read the book, "The Great Gatsby,"

Jost,
You wrote,[...if you would have told him that you read the book...]
Well, I did not post all that was in the converstaion that I had with him.
It was a deep converstaion because {Gatsby} was originally {Gatz}. He changed his name for social reasons, which if anyone would like to discuss the reason for such, I would like to email about that.

I read the book, Phillipa, although quite a while ago.

I mostly remember the atmosphere of decadence, mystery, and fascination with the devil-may-care but enigmatic life and character of the eponymous hero-- & the socalled "beautiful people" drifting in and out of dazzling all-night parties held at his lavish Long Island estate, etc.

I read a lot of F.Scott Fitzgerald novels at some point- I think there were a couple I liked more-- although this is better known.

Might have to look back at them-- it's been a while.

You might enjoy them?

Hey Lou, does that mean that if I go to unipolar heaven I miss out on seeing these folks?

Also, in bipolar heaven does Gatsby go by Gatsby or Gatz?

I love that book, and the movie too.

Lindenblute,
You wrote,[...if I go..will I miss...?]
Well, no. This is because they are adjoining and one can go from one to the other.
You also wrote,[...does Gatsby go by Gatsby or Gatz?...].
Well, Gatz was a character in Fitzgerald's work, who changed his name to Gatsby. The name change is very significant as to Fitzgerald's masterpiece. But to try to answer your question, if one was talking with Fitzgerald about the book, if you are saying that you are wondering if he would use Gatz or Gatsby when referring to him, that would depend on what was the topic of discussion. In my converstaion there, when the aspect of antisemitism was discussed , he used Gatz. When the other aspects were discussed, he used Gatsby.
There was much more in our discussion, and perhaps discussing it here instead of by email could be appropriate.

Oh good- I know a lot of very interesting bipolar folks. Perhaps even in my family- who knows? I'd hate to miss out on their company in the afterlife.

I see. Thanks for clearing that up :)

That sounds great, because I'm an inconsistent e-mailer. What else did you guys talk about? Did Lincoln get involved at all? Gatsby seems like a character that might help inform Lincoln about some of the consequences of his policies?

I'm woefully ignorant- when did FSFiztgerald live?

And I always wonder what happens to East Egg when the autumn comes and all the summer folks move back to the city.

Lindenblute,
You wrote,[...when did F. S. Fitzgerald live?...]
F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote [.. Gatsby...] in the roaring twenties. The winds of antisemitism were felt by him and his novel is IMO a great allogory of deep social and political thought. The characters names have great signficance of the world's social and political environment then.
Hitler had attempted to ovetake the government by force and was imprisoned and published his [...Mien Kamph...].And the winds of antisemitism were known by Fitzgerald and others that did not have to be a weatherman to know that they were strong. The fascist and Nazi ideology was gathering momentum in Europe and in other countries and the dreams of political and social thinkers were being promulgated. Antisemitism and fascism were not invented by Hitler, but his rising to gather political acceptance in the 20's after Germany's defeat in WWI could not be denied and Fitzgerald could pick up the oncomming signals.
In Gatsby, the social and political aspects of social mobility and wealth, capitalism, socialism and the stereotyping of the Jews in some of the characters was brought out by Fitzgerald although he was not antisemitic. There is agreat deal of symbolism and allagory in Gatsby that space and time do not allow me to cover here.
Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald was one of many brilliant authors that suffered from bipolar disorder. Hemingway,T.S Elliot,Victor Hugo,Walt Whitman,Herman Melville, Edgar Allen Poe and many other great authors had the same. They left here things for us to want to dream. Gatsby was about a dream.

Kid47,
There is much more. Fitzgerald saw what was on the horizon and in >Gatsby< there was a warning. His novel was not accepted in greatness untill around 1947. This is in part because of the Great Depression and John Stienbeck's novels that captured the pulse of the country in the 30's and Fitzgerald's death in 1940. In {Gatsby}, what Fitzgerald saw, that was not very clear to many others at the time of publication, and being clouded by the depression later, was becomming very clear after 1947.
I think that {Gatsby}was a forcast for the rise of fascism and IMO helped to bring fascism to an end. The allegory is there when the personages of Jay Gatsby and the Buchanans and the Wilsons are identified allegorically. Which brings up the questions of,
A. Who, or what, then, does Gatsby represent allegorically?
B. What was the dream that Fitzgerald was writing about?
C. Who was Meyer Wolfshiem allegorically?
D. Who were the Nordics?
E. Who did Daisy and Mrs. Wilson represent allegorically?
F. How do the events that culminated in 1947 impact the meaning of the entire novel?
The world can look back at {Gatsby} and I hope that they see the benifit to the world that is contained in a short but profound novel. If Fitzgeral wrote the novel in a hypomanic episode, then it is IMO God's gift to be bipolar.

Friends,
Then the Rider on the White Horse stopped me and said,"Lou, whom do men say that I am?"
And I said to Him, "Some say that you are El Cid or Napoleon, some Joan of Arc, and others William the Conqueror or General Grant and some say that you are the Messiah of Israel."
Then the Rider said to me, "But whom do you say that I am?" I said to the Rider,"If you are an arm of the Lord, to whom is the Arm of the Lord revealed?".
The Rider said to me,"He that sees me, sees He that sent me."
