What is it with MDs anyway?

Posted by finelinebob on September 8, 2006, at 2:00:48

I mean, you go in for ANY kind of check up and they weigh you. And it's like you want to go in next to nekkid because you KNOW how much your clothes weigh, but MDs seem oblivious to this!

Let me state my case:
May visit: 270lbs (wearing Nikes, 501's and a t-shirt)
July visit: 262lbs (wearing sandals, shorts and a t-shirt)
Sept visit: 270lbs (wearing same Nikes, same 501's, not sure about the t-shirt)

And what does he say? "Clothes? about a pound difference."

So much for medicine being an empirical science....

But bob, you know doctors know everything. I mean, it only took 20 years and several pdocs to get my dx right. : )

Standing on that scale w/ her arm stretched over ya' and ya' kinda' move back so she doesn't touch ya' as she messes w/ that dang metal thing like you're a cow or something, and it's sorta' demeaning .. and ya' feel like 'My name is Jill. The nurse needs weigh me so I can see the DocTar! See Spot run!' Ugh! (I think I'll comment on this at my next visit.)

I always wear extra clothes, so if my weight is up, I can rationalize that it must be the clothes.

I have to be weighed backwards, so I can't see. (Guess that's not a surprise, considering my dx...) It's amazing what a problem that is for some people weighing me.

In March, I had surgery, and was weighed beforehand. I did say to that one, "You have to weigh me backwards and not tell me." She said, "Oh, that's OK, lots of people are like that." So, she moved the bars, wrote it down, and walked away -- leaving me standing there, backwards, on the scale because she didn't move the weights back, and I knew I wouldn't be able to get off without looking. When she came back looking for me, I told her she needed to move them back to 0, and she said something snotty about how she'd never heard that one before. I was too upset to say, "Then you haven't weighed someone in treatment for anorexia, I guess." (I was scared by the surgery. That would have been a bad time to see my weight -- just one more thing to send me over the edge.)

And the last time I saw my doctor, I climbed on the scale backwards, the nurse moved the little bars -- AND THEN TOLD ME THE NUMBER! I had started to call out, "NO!" but too late. Then she said, "Oh, you didn't want to know?" Uh, maybe that was why I got on backwards? Maybe I wasn't just confused by the technology? I was still freaking out about that number when the doctor came in. Kinda hard to concentrate on the point of the visit when you're experiencing an episode of psychopathology, you know?

So, FLBob, I believe those 501s are at least 3 pounds, someone else here told you those running shoes are 5 pounds (I'm sure that's each), t-shirts range from 1 to 6 pounds -- and everyone knows socks are about 20 pounds...

Besides, you look just fine from here!

Well, NEXT time I'm going to bring in two bags:

(1) a pair of 501's, my Nikes, a t-shirt
(2) some shorts, my sandals, a t-shirt

... and we'll see once and for all what is scientifically-accurate triple-beam balance has to say!

And for your effort, I would suggest the accuracy of what is actually written in your chart be noted, pointing out that a subtraction needs to be made .. of, either attire style bag #1 or asb #2, or would they rather you got nekked? They would prob' write something down in your chart about being 'weight conscious' and do the 'whispering office staff' routine while you're in your room. You could put your ear up to the door, then quickly open it and stick your head out and scare them. ROFL! I make myself laugh and other things!

Bob, I think we should make a pact, only to climb onto those scales nekkid. Get up to follow the nurse to a room, and when she stops at a scale, we should strip nekkid -- boxers weigh several pounds, as does an underwire bra. Maybe we should stop at the restroom on the way, too, just to be sure...

I'll do it if you do it?

&, after the nurse writes it down, you can say,

BTW-- if I find out that you and your friends out there-- pointing to door-- are talking about me, I'm gonna-- well, I don't what I'm gonna do!

Then, about three minutes after she leaves, you poke your head out, and glare at them, shaking your head, menacingly.

That'll nip that in the bud-----Not!

Okay so I like my name in the headlines!

Also, I'm ashamed to say I worked as a team player(?) in an office staff once. I was one of the doc's secretaries. I guess we treated the patients like animals instead of human beings. There were patients scheduled on top of patients.

Rush rush rush ... hurd 'em in, head 'em up, move 'em out ... Rawhide! HEAD 'EM UP, MOVE 'EM OUT ... RAWHIDE! (My dad loved that show!)

I will speak w/ my PCP 'the second time' about his peculiar office staff. He liked it when I did before. He looked @ me w/ a smile and queer(isthatstillaword4that?) interest in my peculiar and frank ability to 'sum up' the whole of them. He looked at me like 'I can't help it~~~it's the way we are~~~and it's kinda' fun on our end'. (I wanted to slap him!)

Oh I know ... After the tech does the BP and takes our pulse (As if we're not breathing!), we say 'Oh! Don't forget to take 'MY chart' (w/ a louder voice and a challenging look in our eyes) w/ you. I might see what's wrong with me!'

I think docs' offices should have 'We're All Just People' 'open houses' where they, staff, and patients can socialize. Isn't that pretty much what Dr. Bob did at the conference? We might find out we can't 'make fun' of all of them anymore. But, that'd be alright. We can always find some other person, place, or thing, to stomp on, like ... 'Mr. Bill' .... He even likes it! Maybe Mr. Bill's first name is Mikey!? Mr. Mikey Bill!

What the 'same he*l' is up w/ me? I'm not unhappy?! I'm even ... I can't hardly say it ... ha ... haaaa ... ROFL. I gotta' go pee or something. You guys carry on w/o me. (Like I'm not coming back ... Not!)

Wow ... Am I having an 'ififany' ROFL ... today?! Does anyone else feel 'a whole lot of charge'? There's planetary motion and swear I feel it. I don't know the specifics but willing to bet I'm onto something. I'm checkin' it out on beliefnet. Yeah, I know, I was gonna' leave. Here I go now.

That third slap on the right side of my face felt kinda' good.

I'm gonna' bottle this and sell it on the last pages of a kinda' trashy paper!

It's ooooo sooooo tempting ... but my GP is such a nice guy, really, and the nurse who always weighs me is even nicer ... I can't subject them to such horror!

I think the most proper thing to do would be to strip down nekkid, request a urinal/bedpan/trashcan. Perform the necessary ablutions at the last moment, including a very loud noseblowing.

Then step on the scale *ss backwards and tell the nurse- if you EVER tell me what my number is, I won't ask for the urinal/bedpan/trashcan the next time. deal?

Oh, and how about the nurse who weighed me when I was 16 and a year later when I was 17 and noted that I had lost ten pounds and loudly congratulated me on that. Yeah. that was really sensitive, because you know how much a 17-year-old loves to be reminded that she was pudgy last year, and then get positive reinforcement for dieting. Geez, I wasn't even overweight! I'm five-freakin'-ten for God's sake.

Cora, I'm feelin' the vibes, sistah. I nearly ran home, and then I drank 3 beers to mellow out, and now I'm still hyper. happy hyper. don't worry. Subclinical hypomania. I think it's a saturday night thing. :)

Is that what this is ... well 'slap my knee'! Butt, it seems to be a Sunday night thing too! :) Ha! Oh, last eve, well let's just say, I had 'an almost risque(?)' eve here! I met this really nice guy (He gave me his phone number.) and it was very awkward, him being so nice and all! Still ROFL
