Getting oatmeal out of your keyboard?

Posted by gardenergirl on September 6, 2006, at 8:04:30

Anyone have any recommendations on how I can get a blob of oatmeal out of my keyboard?

And should I be pleased that for once it didn't land on me? Probably not. This seems worse.

Help!

Breakfast at the computer? You must be very handy. I need two hands to use my computer. Love Phillipa.

Wipe off the big blobs, let it dry completely, then break up the chunks with a tiny sharp implement, then use a compressed air cannister to blow the remaining bits away.

Wow, this topic reminds me I was having a dream last night that my computer died and I didn't have any backup of anything. It was hot to the touch and there was smoke rising from the keyboard (in the dream). Yikes!

Don't try licking it out, it don't work. I got my tongue wedged between the N and the J keys once. I hit 'enter' and it almost tore my tongue off.

Yeah, thanks from me too Bobby! (nm) » Bobby

You might be able to take the keys off around the blob and just wipe it off. I don't know how to do that, though, but there's usually a way. And I don't know how to put them back on. But it's usually possible so it's possible to get dust out... i suppose oatmeal is a valid reason too. :)

I have a real problem with spilling mixed drinks on the keyboard. Cranberry and Vodka is the worst, its sticky. I've had to buy a new keyboard because of it, and I've already done the same to it - certain keys don't work. Funny thing is I never REMEMBER spilling anything on it.

Oh, and the keys do pop off. But its best not to do too many at a time because then you forget which ones go where. Or I do at least. This may correspond with the mysterious drink spillage though.

SD's suggestion is a good one, since a glob of oatmeal is probably contained to a small area. Letting it dry also seems wise.

Compressed air on a keyboard isn't a good idea. It doesn't removed the dirt and may actually blow it into somewhere bad. Vacuums are better.

Never tried this before, but I can't see why it wouldn't work in theory ... maybe too many circuitboards in keyboards now. But especially for liquid spills where you have nothing else to lose:
1) unplug keyboard
2) wash it out in a sink, letting the water "blast" clean the stain.
3) hang it out till you're certain it dries.

Well heck. I thought I replied

I'm quite certain I did, but internet connection has been very poopy over the last few weeks, so maybe it never finished.

Anyway, thanks for all the tips and especially the chuckles. I love chuckles.

So far so good with the keyboard.
