Color me Beautiful Memories

Posted by Glydin on September 3, 2006, at 8:31:53

I was clearing out a long overdue area and found my "color" bookS - BOTH of them. See, one "expert" deemed me a Summer and yet another "expert" deemed me a Winter. I remember paying a pretty good penny for BOTH diagnoses plus swatchbook plus the appropriate colors for my face.

Now, I laugh, as it as some of the colors - both ideas, mind you - look horrible on me and, more important, I can't stand to wear. Plus, I remember the ABSOLUTE RULES. It was almost criminal to be in the "wrong" colors.

It's funny now.

Yup there were even textbooks and people who analyzed the colors that looked best on you related to the seasons. Have they stopped doing this totally? Love Phillipa

I remember some of my mom's friends trying to convince me I was wearing exactly the worst possible colors for me -- until they got out the books, and looked closely at me, and finally went away having decided that I was right in the first place... Of course, this was the Dark Ages of punk rock, so I had dyed my hair black, and wore a LOT of black, with primary red accents. Not much more -- black, white, tiny bits of red...

Nowadays, I've finally gotten mostly over it. I wear what feels nice on me. When AllDone was here, she and I and Daisy all went shopping, and I bought a BRIGHT ORANGE outfit! I'm pretty sure that's not considered one of my colors by the CMB folks! lol

Thanks for the memories!

Oh gosh, I remember those! I was always hard to label, too. I finally decided I was a summer (that's the lighter version of the warm colors, right?) based on looking at the swatches and picking out the groups that seemed to loook best on me anyway. I maybe was an autumn. I suppose that depended on whether my hair was looking more red or more mousy brown.

My sister was a Winter. Her coloring is gorgeous, although she's been lightening her hair lately. I like it better when it's dark brown. It makes her blue eyes pop out from her fair skin. She can wear colors I can't, like whites and bright pinks and certain blues.

Anyone remember the "rule" that redheads can't were red? I get the most compliments when I wear something true red, and this has been whether my hair was light auburn verging on almost strawberry blond to dark auburn moving to mahogany.

Wonder what my "colors" would do if I went with the wild hair (pardon the pun) I've had lately and colored my hair light stawberry blonde?

eek!

I'd forgotten about all that hoopla. It was fun back then. But I rebelled against "the rules" even then. :)

I once worked with a lady who was STRICT to the point of being dangerous about it. She did an on the side job with Beauticontrol. No lie, we (co-workers) were at a visitation for a relative of a co-worker's and she was critiquing folks and giving "helpful" advice. Someone finally told her to give it up. She might have known "colors" but she DID NOT seem to know there was a time and place for everything and that she wasn't at either.

Ah, one memory just builds to another....

~~~ I have stopped it with the clothing colors and jewelry colors. The eye colors can work for me but if I use the recommended blush and lip colors, I look an awful lot like Raggedy Ann - those hues are pretty intense.
I'm of the belief that as I age I should wear more clothes and less makeup.
Excellent! That's a great way to put it. Ever just want to take a woman aside and say something like, "Dear, we have to talk about your makeup." Or your hair. Or clothes. We're not 16 anymore.
And of course I'd want someone to do the same for me, if appropriate. :)
~~~ Oh, I know. I have horrors of the Bette Davis look of the China Blue pot-o-shadow and the thick liquid liner and oh..... I could go on.

I'm sure Bette was very assured of herself, but, durn.

My 24 year old keeps me in check and I'm grateful for it.

Glydin that's so true. Nothing worse than an older woman with pink and blue eyeshadow, and red blush.

And besides you're beautiful natural. You don't need make-up. Love Phillipa ps I really mean that.
