I'm going on a trip to NY on Mon!

Posted by Deneb on August 13, 2006, at 1:15:16

I'm still here folks. I haven't been posting as often now. I check chat everyday though and I've been chatting a bit.

I'm going with 8 people, 3 of which are my friends. We're going camping for a few days and then heading into NYC.

I think I love my pdoc. I think she really cares. She gave me some trazodone to help me sleep on the trip. She also gave me 3 Ativan for an upcoming medical thingie. She really cares if I suffer. She cares if I'm frightened or can't sleep. I love her. (((((((pdoc)))))))

I hope I won't be too stressed out on my trip. I hope I'll be able to sleep. I think it's going to be exciting.

What should I bring camping? I'm bringing:
• a mummy-style sleeping bag rated for -12ฐC
• a camp pillow
• a self-inflating sleeping mat
• a flashlight
• a first aid kit
• a whistle
• matches
• mosquito repellent
• waterproof sunscreen
• a personal floatation device (I can't swim)
• a water bottle
• a mallet
• garbage bags
• paper plates
• plastic forks and spoons
• aluminium foil

• bar soap
• toothbrush
• shampoo
• eye shadow
• blush
• lipstick
• hair elastic

• instant oatmeal
• fruit-on-the-go bars
• peanut butter
• granola bars
• instant chili and instant noodles
• veggie burgers
• whole wheat buns
• bread

• Celexa
• Wellbutrin
• Risperdal
• trazodone
• Maalox
• Tylenol
• Pepto-Bismol
• Gravol
(do I have to worry about my meds crossing the border? and OMG, I'm a walking pharmacy)

• T-shirts
• sweat pant
• fleece pullover
• jeans and pants
• flirty skirt and lacy tank top (for when we go clubbing in NYC)
• socks
• underwear
• bras
• light down jacket
• flip flops
• fancy high heeled sandals

Friends are bringing:
• tents
• butane stoves
?

What am I missing? Anyone? I don't want to forget anything important. Do you think my list is good?

Hey! Wow, I wish I were as well prepared as you for camping!!!!

Anyway you might want to add waterproof jacket and waterproof overpants to your list.....well certainly here in the UK they're top of my essentials list! In fact, anywhere I go really. Yeah, I would have to say a waterproof jacket is *essential*. Its frightenlying easy to get very very cold when you're wet even if its the middle of summer etc etc.

You might want to add warm hat and gloves. It can get cold at night, and a hat is really good when you're sleeping and you're abit chilly.

Have fun!

Kind regards

Meri

Sunscreen and a swimsuit and a towel. bandaids for blisters and booboos.

Have tons of fun Deneb! You deserve to have a great trip with your friends. If people get on your nerves a little bit, just take a walk and get some quiet time. listen to the birds, go to the camp store and get an ice cream. Take some photos (pack a camera/batteries/film) or draw a picture of something that catches your eye

stop and smell the roses :)

your bud,

Thanks Meri-Tuuli!

The waterproof jacket and pants are a good idea, unfortunately I don't have any. I should make a note to buy some! I am bringing a down winter jacket. It's not waterproof, but it's a little water resistant.

The hat and gloves are a very good idea. I'll bring one. Thanks!

This time 2 years ago I went meteor shower watching and I got mildly hypothermic. It was warm enough for a T-shirt during the day, but at night even a down jacket wasn't enough. It was really damp so that didn't help. I was shivering sooo bad. Then I would stop shivering and then start again. I was stumbling and everything. Finally I couldn't stand it any longer and went inside a heated car.

We're going to stay at Lake George. I haven't consulted a map yet so I don't know where that is. I didn't do the planning.

Hello!

Yes, the waterproof jacket is pretty essential I reckon. You don't need anything fancy as long as it keeps you dry if there is a shower or something like that. You can pick up waterproofs pretty cheaply at army surplus type stores, or camping shops (although they tend to stock the more fancy types).

Yes, I'm mildly paranoid about getting hypothermic - its very easily done as you've noticed! I've done tons and tons of fieldwork/camping/hiking/etc and seriously, if you get wet you get very cold even if its the middle of summer. Well, maybe if its not like 100 degress or something. But even in hot desert types of places it gets really cold at night.

Anyway. How about a compass (to add to your list)? Although I don't know if you'll be doing any hiking type stuff.

Anyway, kind regards

Meri

I'll definitely buy one after my trip. It's too late to buy one now. In the meanwhile, I have several large garbage bags. If it rains I can make a poncho of sorts.

> Anyway. How about a compass (to add to your list)? Although I don't know if you'll be doing any hiking type stuff.

I don't know if we will be doing any hiking. I don't have a compass. Maybe someone else will bring one. I have a whistle though. lol If I get lost I'll just use that and wait for someone to save me. LOL

I don't think we're going to be in the wilderness. My friend who booked the camp sites actually said there are full washroom facilities, including showers.

Eeek, I can't believe the trip is tomorrow. I won't be back until the 21st.

I'll miss you while you're gone :o)

I'll miss the bob-love posts too-- LOL. Thank goodness his picture is back to semi-normal (whew!)

If you forget anything, I'm sure you can find a wal-mart or a store and buy anything essential. I think you're going to have a great time :)

Where are you going camping? I lived in upstate NY when I was young, and it was BEAUTIFUL. Can't give you any advice on camping though, I'm a city girl. I did go to NYC when I was in fifth grade. But since that was in 1980 I don't think I can give you any advice there. I'm afraid I would get really upset about the twin towers, so you may want to watch out for that considering you're a sensitive soul like me.

As I've said before, you have a very exciting life! You should be proud of yourself for the way you're so daring. You're doing things I would never have the guts to do at your age! And its great! I'm so proud of you!!! I would even say I even look up to you. You go girl!

Hi Dr. Bob,

I'm going to New York! I've never been to NY with friends before. It's going to be exciting. I'm going to think of you sometimes.

I just wanted to talk to you some more before I leave tomorrow. I leave at around noon tomorrow.

LOL You probably don't care, but I like to pretend.

Anyways, I love you Bob, even though you ignore me most of the time.

Wow! Thanks everyone. Thanks for the well wishes.

I'm really excited about the trip.

My friend just called and she's worried that the car may not have enough room for all our stuff. Yikes!

She told me to leave out the winter jacket and that 13ฐC (what the night low is) isn't really that cold....YA RIGHT!

13ฐC is very cold when you're staying out there in the elements! She's never been camping, she doesn't know how cold a summer night can be. She's not taking her jacket.

I've switched my down jacket for a less bulky thick fleece jacket, which might be better anyways because down loses it's insulative properties when wet and fleece doesn't as much.

I packed a fleece blanket as well. When my friend gets cold I'll let her use my blanket. She also didn't pack a sleeping mat. Sleeping bag ratings take assume the use of a sleeping mat, otherwise it gets pretty cold in a bag. I just hope she won't get hypothermic. I would rather pack fewer T-shirts and less food than forgo the jacket.

I'm bringing my 3 person tent! YAY! YIPPEE! I LOVE my tent! It's a good tent, with sealed seams and a tub floor. It has a full rain fly and the tent material is reflective.

I'm bringing my smaller 3 person tent so my other friend won't have to bring her bigger 4 person tent. That will save some space.

Did I mention that I LOVE my tent? LOL

I don't think I'll mind sharing my tent.

I'm soooo excited right now! I'm going camping! I'm going to NYC!

LOL This excitement will probably wear off during the long drive.

I can't wait to go! I'm just waiting and waiting right now. I'm so excited! I'm ready to go! I want to go now! LOL

Excitement is sort of like anxiety in some ways. I get that "butterflies in my stomach" feeling, only without the fear.

I'm sooo excited! I was literally jumping up and down!

Dr. Bob, I'm going to NY! I know you're very interested in what I'm doing, right? LOL I know you're happy for me, right? LOL

Oh Bob, (((((((Dr. Bob))))))))

Sleeping mats are essential!!!!!

The thing is, even if the *air* temperture is 13บC (which isn't that warm in the elements, particulary if there is a breeze and you're just sat about, ie not moving) the actual ground temperature will be alot cooler than 13บC. And when you're lying on the ground all night, thats alot of body heat being lost through the ground. Sleeping mats really make a big difference!! Plus never trust forecasts, always be prepared for any type of weather, particulary bad weather.

I mean, granted, you're not exactly off to do any serious hill-walking/wild camping, but still you're very right to bring extra blankets etc.

Are you Canadian Deneb - you use บC rather than F? I personally can't use F.

Kind regards

Meri

Wow Deneb,
you sound like an experienced camper. You're going to have a great time. Enjoy your tent with the sealed seams and the rain fly and all. your friend will no doubt be jealous of your ground mat, when she discovers that she's sleeping on a stick or a rock.

so I'll just pretend

I totally agree! A LOT of body heat is lost through the ground. I really hope my friend will be okay. I have a 1 1/2 inche thick self-inflating sleeping mat. It rolls up pretty compact. My sleeping bag is also compact, it's very squishable because it's down, mummy style and a small size (I'm short).

> Are you Canadian Deneb - you use บC rather than F? I personally can't use F.

Yep. I'm Canadian. I can't use F either. LOL It just doesn't make sense, especially when doing physics or chemistry calculations.

I'm really glad I can share my excitement here.
