Awesome! Oooo I'm missing Europe sometimes....lived in Germany for 3 years.

Where did you drive, if you'd feel okay saying? (if not, I totally understand) I mean, in what town...? Not like I know the whole country, but the well-known areas, I do. Hah - I had a big American minivan and negotiated those villages often....had to back down a street or two....tooooo narrow... But German drivers were *so* very considerate it helped in the nervous department.

I lived just outside Kaiserslautern....down near the French border....loved the autobahn...fast, sure, but so very safe, really, great drivers, and amazingly-maintained!!!

I drove all over west germany from frankfurt north to bremen. inner city driving in cologne, frankfurt and bremen. predictable drivers and yes, the autobahn is built like a runway. a porsche passed us going perhaps 150 mph

I've heard Germany is beautiful. For some reason I think nature in different countries is somehow more magical. I guess because over there are places that haven't changed in 1000's of years. I would love to go to one of those ancient forrests where the trees are unbelievably humungous. Or one of those really really old crumbling castles. Or the Pyramids! Or the Coliseum in Greece! Stonehenge! I find things like that so facinating, on an almost religious level. Not to offend people who are religious. Its just the only way I know to articulate it.

Just the beauty of nature, old or new, can fill me with euphoria. In some weird way, my love of nature IS my religion. I've been called an earth mother before. I'm not sure what that means, but it feels right.

I guess I'm sort of talking about two different things, ancient man and nature, but they go together to me.

I hope I get to travel the world some day and see these things. I want to see every corner of the earth - artic, desert, jungle, and whatever else is out there.

Italy is a very nice country. But I dont like the country in the country there ;-) From the cultural standpoint, eating, beaches and especially the protected natural forest. The islands and vulcans are very nice also. I like the "dolce far niente" lifestyle of the people. They have very low rate of heart problems compared with the countries in the north eg. Germany. German people work like hell everyday.

Greece is very nice too but the capital very dirty.
Peloponnes is a half-island connected by a bridge where you can see the landscape and much of the old greek culture, colosseums, buildings, statues...

I just counted that I wrote "very" five times in the text above. Interesting. It seems that emotions of "very" beautiful times came up when I remember to those travels some time ago. I was in Italy maybe eleven times. I remember the taste, the wind blew through the long, dry grass. Italian people like children and they always liked me. I remember an old woman wanted to adopt me and two nice, lovely girls playing with me at the beach. When I was very young I personally fell in love with an italian speaking girl from the hotel on the island. We played together with many ants on the big stones in the garden watching the beach and yes we even ate them. It was a sour taste but actually good. We played in the hall of the hotel also. We were able to communicate and understand each other in spite of absolutely no italian language available understandably as a child.

I love the people there.

Wow, what a beautiful memory! Seriously, that was so touching.

Italy is definitely a must see on my list. There was a movie about this woman who moved to Monaco and bought an old house she fixed up (I can't remember the name, but it was pretty mainstream), and I wanted to do the same thing so-o-o bad! I liked the movie just because of the whole concept (I'm usually not that into chic flicks). It didn't hurt that she ended up with a georgeous guy. But the country was so beautiful.

I don't know what it is about foreign countries that have such an appeal to me, but they definitely do. Maybe someday...

I know exactly which movie you're talking about, but I too, have forgotten the title!! I think it had Sandra Oh (?) in it too, she was in 'sideways' as a main charactor.

Well, if its any consolation, I live in the UK and I'm slightly fasinated by America. You have so much space! And different climates! And national parks!!! And I've only ever been to North East America, specifically Boston (well Cambridge), NY, Cape Cod, and New Hampshire!! It was well nice.
I'd love to see the American desert, Death Valley, California. My bf is off to Santa Fe for work stuff in September, I wish we had the money for a travel companion...oh well. I'll be moving to Finland so thats pretty exciting!!!!

Kind regards

Meri

I like Italy too... the relaxed pace, the big gestures, the musicality of the language, the food that is simple and fresh and delicious. The sun, and the history that people take as a matter of fact. And the funny little cars!

Penne a la vodka...

Gelato...

museums...

mmm

Hi all

It seems that I have a lot of friends sharing their memory, imagination or wishes with me.

I don't have a TV anymore. Maybe I can download the film with the donkey -> Thanks TexasChic for the suggestion. I've never been in the USA. I was in South America. My mother told me much of the States because she widely travelled and she was in that NASA control room during the landing of the moon mission in Houston TX. I have the webshots desktop program installed on my computer. I especially like the landscape pictures from Oregon, California, New England, Colorado, the national parks and some of the south. But I don't like the huge cities everywhere on that planet. It remembers me to a cancer.

affettuosi saluti

> I know exactly which movie you're talking about, but I too, have forgotten the title!! I think it had Sandra Oh (?) in it too, she was in 'sideways' as a main charactor.

Yep! I was thinking as I wrote that it had the Asian chic who's character was a lesbian that had invitro and then her girlfriend left her. But that seemed like too much detail to go into.

Isn't it funny how the grass is always greener??? I've also been to Cape Cod and lived in Upstate NY when I was a kid. The New England area is so beautiful, especially during the fall.

> I'd love to see the American desert, Death Valley, California. My bf is off to Santa Fe for work stuff in September, I wish we had the money for a travel companion...oh well.

It's pretty pitiful, I haven't seen the two states closest to me, New Mexico and Louisianna. And I've always wanted to see both! I wish I had gone ahead and seen New Orleans before the hurricane, but I will still go eventually. I think the desert would be amazing. I'd love to see New Mexico, Arizona, the Grand Canyon. I've never seen that part of the country. I want to drive down those endless roads in a convertible with nothing but the desert on either side like you see in movies. I don't know why that desolation appeals to me, but it does. I'd also love to see Tennesee and Kentucky. They just sound so beautiful.

>I'll be moving to Finland so thats pretty exciting!!!!
That IS exciting! I'm not ever sure where that is! Aren't we Americans pitiful with our geography? I know I am anyway.

I dream that some day I will find the perfect companion that loves impromtu road trips, and will not only want to go, but incourage me to step out into the unknown. I have a friend who along with his wife would just drive to New Mexico for the weekend. Or Yellowstone Park. I was so jealous. I'm almost tempted to go by myself. Especially to Europe or Austailia. Why do those places seem so surreal. It's something I've only read about. Ooh, or Brazil. That would be so amazing.

Tex, why *not* go by yourself? you can stay in youth hostels , which are clean, and often in spectacular locations (like in a castle), and have lots of fun people who are trying to get out and see a bit of the world. You sound pretty social, and I think you might have a LOT of fun on a short trip to France, or Brazil, or ?

Texas is kind of hard to get out of. I think Hot Springs AR is nice, and they have spas there that are pretty reasonable. New Mexico is gorgeous. I like Albuquerque especially. And I can go on and on about E. TN and KY and W. NC. I love the Southern Appalachians.

When's your next vacation? :o)

I'm not sure what you're talking about, but thanks! There have been many times in my life that I've realized someone did something for me that they didn't have to. And usually I never have a chance to thank them! Like the lady that called 911 after my wreck when I was too in shock to do so, or when the family gave me a ride after my car broke down miles from nowhere. Even when the woman in line at the grocery store tells me to go ahead of her because I had a few items and she had several. There's absolutely no reason to do these things! So I do my best to pass it on. I think if enough people do unselfish things for others, it will eventually influence others to do the same. Even if every 10000 good deeds influenced only one person, think of how it could change the world!

Anyway, thanks for the acknowledgement! Just do something nice for someone when you have absolutely no reason to. You never know how you may effect someone's life.

-T

P.S. I know this is really goody goody and cheesy, but I truly believe it. I think positive energy comes back to you, even if only in a psychological way.

...it was a mother and her child without money wrote that she wants to kill herself.

"I think if enough people do unselfish things for others, it will eventually influence others to do the same"

A very positive thought. I try it. Except in my holidays maybe. But I've to pay attention of myself too.

An interesting book concerning selfish/unselfish

Tex, I like this sentiment a lot :o)

And I will add that it's also important to try to help people you know too, not just strangers.

I have long taken the attitude that it's better to be friendly (or at least civil) to difficult people, because you'd rather be friends with them than enemies, no?

But sometimes it becomes necessary to protect onesself, and not allow other people to take advantage of our kindness (see my narcissistic friend post, below)
