Anyone Know anthing about raising a 3lb pup?

Posted by Phillipa on August 2, 2006, at 12:37:00

Well we got the pup late yesterday and she's a doll. But having trouble getting her to eat drink . She only wants to eat out of my hand and moist crunchy food. Proplan is what the breeder said. And she really doesn't eat or drink much. She is in her kennel cage in the bedroom. We have a nice lambskin on the back of the cage for her to sleep on but she's sleeping on the floor in the front of the cage. Breeder said to leave food and water for her all the time. She kept my husband up all night. Wouldn't sleep in bed with us like Teddy did. I worry about my babies. Anyone with any suggestions on how to care, feed, water such a small pup? Thanks I need your help. Love Phillipa

Part of it you just have to endure. She'll outgrow it. She's a baby, and she just lost everything she knew, her mom, her littermates, and her familiar surroundings. She needs time to get her bearings.

Leave the food out, but if you're leaving out moist food, remember that it gets kind of icky pretty quickly. You need to just put out a bit and pick it up before too long.

She's probably too discombobulated to want to eat or drink much. I assume she's been checked out by your vet and she's healthy.

Whatever helps her feel comfy and at home will help her with eating and drinking. I often lay on the floor when I have babies. I'll just watch tv or read a book, and let them come explore me. Let them take the lead in how much contact is comfortable for them. It usually doesn't take long until they're climbing mount Dinah and nibbling various Dinah parts.

Nighttime crying just *is*. Even after they're having tons of fun with you and following you everywhere nighttime is lonely for someone used to a mound of warm playmates. You can try ticking clocks or warm water bottles or one of those womb bears, but I've never found any of that to work. Babies just cry at night until they learn to sleep alone. And since they sleep so much during the day, they'll wake up and get bored at night as well.

They outgrow it, thank heavens.

If I remember correctly, it was approximately a month of h*ll with our seven week old. We swore never to get another baby. Fortunately time mellows those memories.

Ah, I remember how we made nighttime crying bearable.

We stuck our most maternal dog in with the baby. She didn't care for it overmuch, but she tolerated being treated as a littermate and they got to be reasonably close. The baby quit crying pretty much.

I guess that's not an option with Teddy?

Hi,

Congrats on the new pup! :)

One thing that might help the nighttime is trying to tire her out in the day. Play play play.

As far as not sleeping on the lambskin, I wouldn't worry about that too much. Maybe she's used to a hard surface. Maybe she's too hot for the lambskin. It's nice she has a variety to pick from. If she's like mine, she'll move back and forth between several sleeping spots at night.

What type of pup did you get? :)

I've got two right now that are only four and a half pounds full grown, at most.

My smallest was 2 3/4 pounds at her heaviest, seven and a half inches at the shoulder. Healthy as could be.

I loved that dog more than life.

Dinah I'm sure you saw that she's only 2 1/2 lbs. And will reach maybe l0lbs. What breed do you have? teacup poodle, shitzsu, chiqiwa sp? Well she just peed on the rug. It's so hot we took her outside I said she wouldn't pee so I brought her back inside. Shusssh don't tell my husband he said that's what she'd do!!!!!!Love Phillipa

My current two little ones are Maltese.

I'm really not great at housetraining, yet they all seem to get there eventually. I think they must train each other. I know you're supposed to use crates to train them, but I'm a sucker for a sad face.

Make sure you clean that spot well, or she'll find it again and again.

Dinah Maltese's are so beautiful. Yup got a spot remover and cleaned the pee off the carpet. Then she went out and peed again. Good thing Greg is here I'm like you with the training. Oh I wanted to get the puppy pads for inside but the Vet didn't recommend it. So I didn't. But I finally got her to eat . I mixed some soft proplan with the hard stuff put in a large bowl She climbed in with her front feet and ate a good meal. Thankfully I really was worried about her eating. Love Phillipa

Thought this might be helpful: My vet recommended taking the dog out to potty every 20 minutes. It sounded a bit weird but it really worked. Only did the 20-minute routine for a few days, then longer intervals. Your pup's mileage may vary. At 4 months, she seems to be completely potty trained; barks at the door and everything. A tip of the hat to my vet!

She's a shepherd mix - quite a bit bigger than your pup, now about 30 pounds. Yeah, every 20 minutes was a bit of a pain but well worth the effort. A lot easier than sopping up a big pee (big dog, big bladder) from our deep-pile carpet. And now that she's completely potty trained, we can relax. Also, like a lot of pups, she lasted all night from the start, when she was 9 weeks old.

cheesecake, Wow that's big. As you saw below she's really 2.5lbs. Little pee and little poop. The Vet said her bladder could handle around 2-3 hours. But she has no clue we take her out and come back in and she swats and pees. Well we're trying and I must say my husand is much better with her than me. Might be our age difference as he's in his 40's and I'm l3 yrs older you can figure it out. Yup he's sleeping on the couch with her as when she wakes up aroung 5 all she wants to do is play. I started with every two hours myself, training my dog. I had the same trouble as you. I got my dog in the middle of back-to-back tropical storms, so I was standing outside under a huge umbrella as my dog just stood there, *not* peeing. ;-) She came right back in and promptly hit the carpet.

I had good luck praising her lavishly (I mean over the top) each time she *did* do something outside, including a dog treat. She really responded well to the positive feedback. When she messed up inside, I just scooped her up and plopped her outside. No punishment. She was trained in about 1 week.

Also, there is a product at the pet store called *Simple Solution* which uses enzymes to completely get rid of any odor where she wet. Even if you can't smell it, she can, and she might come to see this as *her spot.* It's about $12 for a half gallon, but it's worth it.

Good luck! :-)

Snoozing that's exactly what I bought yesterday. Right now she's sleeping next to a stuffed animal on the floor. I just asked my husband where she was she's so tiny I didn't even see her. And I pity you with the storm last year. But I'd save that for my husband.Love Phillipa

May I suggest taking a photo of your pup in a mailbox or newspaper holder? We did this with our pug when he was 5 lbs and it's the most adorable puppy photo we have.

The pug was a real finicky eater for a month or two. He started at 4.5 lbs when we got him at 7 weeks. I was worried about his eating so I'd stand over him and drag him back to his food if I thought he lost interest too fast. This stage lasted a month or so. Now he gulps his meals in 30 seconds. In hindsight I wish I had worried less about how much he ate because he turned out just fine. I didn't need to stand over him. Dogs eat when they're hungry. As long is the dog is eating something and pooping ok you don't need to worry.

We bought earplugs and let the puppy cry at night. I felt bad about it but ultimately we didn't want him to sleep on our bed. He stopped crying after a week, maybe less. We kept the puppy in a 6x6' pen with litter boxes on plastic on one side and his dog bed on the other. When we woke up in the morning he would have gone 2-3 times during the night for the first 2 months or so. I found this much easier than worrying about waking up to take the puppy out, although cleaning up in the morning was a bit of a pain.

The first month of having a puppy was hard, even though I wanted a puppy desperately and had experience with a pug puppy as a teenager. I kept threatening to trade the pug in for a goldfish (mostly after he peed on the floor). It got way easier after that.

Did I mention that you should take lots of photos? Do you have a photo of your puppy to share? I like puppies

we have a small alcove off the living room that has 4' high walls and a doorway. we just put a baby gate across to make a 6x6 pen.

They do have some materials to make pens at petsmart if you don't have a convenient room. The open air room is nice cause he can hear us. For example, http://www.petsmart.com/global/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441778313&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302035803&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302023689&bmUID=1154669856117&itemNo=21&Nao=12&In=Dog&N=2035803&Ne=2 and http://www.petsmart.com/global/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441781990&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302035804&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302023689&bmUID=1154669678933&itemNo=7&In=Dog&N=2035804&Ne=2.

Personally I like the pen because you can keep the dog in a bit longer and the dog can have a place to pee and a place to sleep. We don't keep him in there all day though. We fenced the yard and my husband built him a dog house. He sleeps in the dog house and barks at the neighbour's truck while my husband works around the house.

I saw the pics, too cute! It's a wonder that puppy can even see with all that fur. lol. what a sweetie

a little baking soda dissolved in water works to get rid of urine too (so they don't keep going there)

yeah i used to take mine out every 20 minutes to start with too. have some kind of word. 'busy busy busy' or something like that you can say over and over and do that. then when they go heaps of praise and a treat or something. that way... eventually they will go (or try and go) on command. great for when you are planning a long car trip or something like that.

pays to stick to the food that the breeder was using because changing the diet too suddenly can lead to upset stomach. if you do change it then change it slowly...

yeah crying is hard :-(

i wish i had a puppy :-(

i miss my dogs.

would you believe... my last dog was chloe.

Chloe was particularly neurotic though I spent a lot of time with her training her for this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dog_agility

Which is kinda (sorta) like showjumping for dogs...

Also had a male I named after William Blake. He wasn't as smart but he was from obedience lines rather than hearding lines. Made a world of difference temperament wise.

Chloe learned about 100 words...
I was trying to teach her some kind of basic syntax just to show my philosophy of language lecturer to be wrong...

'find ball outside'

She was addicted to playing with her ball and she knew a variety of objects that she could find... But outside... was more a place you were sent when you were bad... she would look excited that i was asking her to find ball because find ball really meant something more like 'lets play ball!' i guess... the outside bit confused her though. She would hang her head and sneak off outside... Eventually she got it a little bit... But not really...

Guess Chomsky was right sigh.

;-)

In the end... Both dogs went to live with my previous partner out on a 2acre fully fenced section. Much better for them. Long time ago now (8 years ago or something). Don't even know that Chloe would recognise me now. Saw her a couple years after and she seemed to have forgotten. That was really hard. Really hard. But she is better off now...

and this:

though she didn't like that half as much as agility. also did a lot with these:

she would have loved frisbee (or disk sport) but i don't think there was a club for that at the time...
