hi all,
I travelled for 16 hours today, between public transit and cab and delays and having to check in twice, and long lines at security and customs. I finally made it to Vancouver!!And I didn't even get stressed out. I was mellow. calm. kept my wits about me :)
My hotel room is SOOOO nice. much nicer than I usually get. I almost feel like a superstar. But I guess superstars trash their hotel rooms. I'm going to keep mine nice.
love from B.C.
-llfrom the tiny introduction i got, Vancouver seems pretty nice. very scenic and clean. people are friendly, and they have this nifty accent. Can someone help me figure out what the accent is? Where does it come from? For instance I know that the Appalachian accent is derived from Scottish settlers, but here? It's different than my Ontario friend's accent. Her's is more midwestern, (except for a few special words like 'about')

Oh Gosh
I'm so sorry, I thought you weren't leaving til the weekend, I don't know why :(
I'm glad you survived the line-ups at the airport, it's famous for them.
Say hi to Downtown for me.
Have a great time Lurpsie

And internet service in your hotel room. Is the accent French? If Lar were here we could ask him but someone will know and post it. I never knew there were so many Canadians on Babble. Love phillipa

P.S
The accent is simply known as the Westcoast Canadian accent
(really) although apparently the different pronounciation of words is not actually exclusive to Canada.
You're right the Ontario accent is different, my "Ryan" is from Ohio and he sounds like he's from Eastern Canada (except that he says "soda")Funny you should mention "about" cause that's what I tease him abOWt.

I'm saying hi to downtown as I type. I can look out my hotel window and see people working in their offices. lots of glass. I think I will go to Stanley park tomorrow, and maybe to the Capilano suspension bridge. it looks nice.
it didn't get dark until 9 pm here last night. I like it!

In the south, lots of folks say 'you wanna coke?' sure. 'what kind? sprite, root beer, diet?'
haha coke is king

> -llAccents sure are funny. I visited with my cousin who is from Minnesota and he thought that he sounded Canadian! Not!! It's funny, even when you travel across the border from Niagara Falls Ontario to Niagara Falls New York, the accent alone confirms that you're in a much different place.
I treasure my Canadian accent, softened by living so many years in the US and England. I even became nostalgic when I used to watch Peter Jennings do the news. *sigh* John Roberts (now CNN) has slipped the ties on that one. You'd never guess that he used to be a DJ on Canadian radio - J.D. Roberts - and then a VJ on television before his big break to the States.
I hope that my country continues to be good to you, Llrrrpp!!

Well if you want a good sandwich on focaccia go to Capers, it sounds like you're around there.
Capilano suspension bridge is kind of weird.
Well I think it is.
They show pictures of it like it's a spectacular forest (well it is) but the trail is all marked off so you have to basically walk a cattle run with everyone else, until you get to the store where they happily sell you bits of nature.
And
Oh man.. these really disturbed me.
Every once in a while along the trail there is a little marked off spot with a couple of steps and a sign that says "Kodak perfect picture spot"
People *line up* to take the same picture, cause the sign told them it was a good place.

>oh, this is my fear. Well. too bad. Is there a nice hike/nature walk that I can take that's accessible by public transit? I will go to the big park tomorrow.
How about the aquarium?
Thanks for warning me about the bridge?- I know you're busy!!!
I'm staying near Wall Centre (NOTE: Americans- Centre is spelled all goofy here! and the ATM asked me if I wanted to withdraw from my chequeing/or was it chequing account.)
breathing in crisp pacific air,

>Ha! I was right. Don't ask me how I made the connection but something about "I don't care what Jet Dry does!" made me think that you wouldn't care for that sort of thing.
Stanley Park actually has some really nice places to walk after you get off the beaten path.
I was a downtown chick, so I didn't ever really hike much, I was one in the milieu of those clothed in black drinking double espresso.
> How about the aquarium?
>I think the aquarium is pretty cool, though I could never bring myself to go.
Birds in cages make me cry (yes literally)
So I'd be a mess at the aquarium, (nothing political here, just my own reaction)The science museum is pretty neat too.
And you know, I'm not being ANY help.
What's going to happen is... after you get back I'm going to suddenly remember all the great places I should have told you about.
Darn, it's like a pop quiz.> Thanks for warning me about the bridge?- I know you're busy!!!

Jeez - I've never noticed the accept. I've lived in Ontario most of my life. I did live for about 3 years in various parts of BC & still have friends from there who I see occasionally & I have never ever noticed an accent!
I am glad you like your hotel room & I hope you have a lovely time!
