Vet said six weeks is not too early for the pup co

Posted by Phillipa on July 18, 2006, at 13:45:17

After reading the comment yesterday my gutt said to call the Vet and see if six weeks is too young to get our puppy. Believe it not the Vet said the early ones adapt to us better as long as they are eatting and drinking by theyselves. Has anyone had a six week old tiny puppy and did you need anything special other than a cage? Thanks Love Phillipa

Your baby's a Shih Tzu, right?

From the national breed club.

Part way down. Age.

Also, there should be recommendations there on what you'll need.

I never can tell Shih Tzu from Lhasas.

Their guidelines say ten weeks.

I'm not trying to distress you. As I said, I brought one home at seven weeks, and although we had a rough few weeks, everything went fine in the end.

It's just something of a cause for me that puppies get the very best start in life, which has more to do with breeders than it has to do with you.

Dinah it's a lahsapoo. A cross of a toy poodle and lapsa. I had one who lived to be l7. And have a two year toy poodle now. I agree with you on the age as I think the puppy should be eight weeks old as that is the age the others were. We're planning on asking the breeder to keep her til eight weeks. She has to have teeth to eat. And I do know how to socialize them. My Teddy is the sweatheart of the neighborhood due to me letting him meet and play with other pups and dogs as a puppy. Oh and he sleeps inbetween my husband and me. The biggest problem we see will be jelousy. Teddy knocks the cat off the bed if he dares jump up. Love Phillipa

I've had little ones for more than thirty years now. :) I love them dearly.

After over thirty years of never having one live past sixteen, and only one at sixteen, we've got two seventeen year olds right now. Most lived to fourteen or fifteen.

My two younger babies sleep one to each side of me, with special care that the one on the outside doesn't fall out of bed, as I lost one that way. When they're both to the inside they play all night and keep my husband awake.

Good luck with your little one. I'm sure she'll be a sweetie.

Dinah I e-mailed the breeder today. She reassured me. She said the puppy will be 7 weeks old on the 29th the day we pick her up.And something I didn't know. When the pups start to get teeth the Mother dog refuses to let them nurse. And she said that after 20years of breeding she won't let a pup go that isn't ready. what a relief. Not I have to race around and find a teether you freeze to help their gums. Got the rest need some new toys too. Love Phillipa
