How come you have pennies (if you do, and I assume this is in the States)?
There's pounds shillings and pence but you have dollars and cents, but maybe not?
And while we're at it, what's a dime and a nickel?
I wish we had kept shillings, it's such a lovely word.

I wish you had kept shillings, too. And, really, didn't you have an English system, with everything in multiples of 12? Sixpence and all that? (I was hoping to find a sixpence to put in my shoe when I was married, but no joy.)
Nickels are five cent pieces, and dimes are ten cents. Then we have quarters, for twenty five cents -- a quarter dollar. It's harder to find them, but there are also half dollars, and dollar coins.

From top to bottom, that's a Quarter, Nickel, and Dime. And don't think generations of children haven't experienced great confusion about the fact that nickels are bigger than dimes, but are worth less...How's that? Almost like being there, huh?

You don't have those? I don't even want to get into volumes, as in "I drank a quarter of whisky last night." I like imperial measurements, especially feet and inches. Centimetres suck.

I had one for my wedding day shoe. My mil lent it to me, along with a handkerchief she carried. I just went upstairs to see what kind it was to be sure, but I apparently lent it to my sil when she got married. But it was fun.

Yeah, metrics are for those without the imagination to count in twelves. {sigh} What would Tommy Steele have sung, if there hadn't been sixpence? "Half a dime" just doesn't do it, nor does "half a 10p coin"

See, we used to have pennies before 1966, when metrics came in for money and later for measurements. Some people never bothered and there's (hopefully) a nice retro glamour about feet and inches, and even shillings and multiples of 12. But since you have dollars and cents I thought you'd never have had pennies, but I'd hear about them now and then.

We have pennies in the UK!! 1p. 1/100th of a pound, £.
Yeah, I think the EuroZone have cents.
But, yeah, shillings were done away with, I guess the same time as over in Oz? BTW your plastic notes are really very cool, even if I had said so before.
But I really hate imperial measurements. I grew up learning metric with no reference to imperial whatsoever, and then I studied physics which is all SI units. I remember when I was a kid asking for a half of a 'quarter' of boiled sweets (you know those sweets in large jars they sell) and the assitant laughing at me!!
Also, 1 American pint of beer is not the same as a British pint of beer. For some reason a pint in America and the UK is actually different in volume, the US one being slightly smaller. I even had an arguement with my boyfriend who was living in America at the time. I was right!!! hehehehe....
Bring on metric measurements I say however clinical they may be!!!

You have quarters in the US? How many mls in a quarter? It would be 1,200 in an imperial quart.
