Both are important, but neither touches me enough to be regular listening. I guess a black American man whose best work was in the 30's and 40's, versus a white English group whose best work was in the 70's is an interesting choice. Maybe time, place, race aren't even factors.
Hank Williams or Kraftwerk?
I'll go with Black Sabbath. I love jazz, but electric guitars are my first love.
But if it was Coltrane or Zeppelin, I'd go with Coltrane. Who knows exactly why. I guess counting records and being honest about how often I listen is the only real criterea.
In the great historical scheme of things, Ellington might be more important, he is clearly a better musical mind.
Helping to bridge the racial divide in America with music that first entertained then later enlightened the popular audience versus giving a voice to the unvoiced underclass city youth of early seventies white america and england.
I'm thinking way too much.

My favorite music came out around the time of my birth.
80s British and New Wave, nothing better in my book. It never gets old.
