Handleless Hammerheads

Posted by curtm on June 2, 2006, at 10:08:02

They are lifeless. They have no purpose. They have no destiny to be what they really want to be. I guess they could be something else if they tried...paperweights, perhaps?

Here's a hammer with it's handle so loose it's ready to fall out- has built a lot of stuff. Here's one with a broken claw- he pryed too hard, but his handle is still good so it can still be used to some extent. Here a couple without handles- broken off inside the head.

They wait and await. Along comes a brand new shiny hammer with an unscarred handle. The others will have to wait longer. They know the fate of the new hammer. One bad swing and it's in with the rest.

Hammerheads. At least they're not broken handles. Those get tossed out.

I have a pick axe with a handle that come loose and won't stay attached. It was just such a nice handle, stamped "Hickory" and all, I couldn't bear to toss it out. And that pick axe, it's cast iron or something, gotta save that. So they sit there, two sturdy solid chunks of stuff with no real purpose.

IF yo have the kind where the axe slides down the handle from the bottom (the hand held end) you can get some heavy pine tar and smear it around the head. Beat the axe on tightly and it "sticks" together better.

Auctions. Go to auctions. You can get well-tested, broken in, hand polished (literally) tool handles.....with the heads still on them.....for less money than you can get a Home Depot-can-I-find-one-made-with-decent-lumber? replacement handle.

All they need is a little proper care, and they can work again.

The wood has dried out, shrinking it in all three dimensions, but particularly laterally. It shrinks into a smaller cylinder.

The wood needs to swell again, but you have to do that while the handle is in the proper position. And you position the handle within the head with wedges. Maybe you also lost a wedge? The look like great big teeth, made to split the wood between the grain, but bite back sideways so they can't pull back out with the momentum of the swing.

To swell the wood, water will do, in a pinch. Set the thing up (wedge the handle in position), and stand it in a puddle or a pond. Just the head part, submerged. But better would be glycol, like as in car antifreeze. But get the kind that is for RV winterizing. Keep it away from animals. They may drink it, and die. Or, get some PEG from Home Depot.

Soak for a week, and the glycol will set the head nice and tight. It won't dry out again.

After it's soaked, get a dab of motor oil on a rag, and go over all the metal parts until they change colour. Wipe down.

I keep a broken softball bat near my front door. you know, in case I ever need to play softball with someone's head.

As for hammers and assorted paraphenalia:

Never underestimate the power of a heavy, blunt object, or a heavy, blunt person.
