Every Computer around me is F'd

Posted by Joan797 on April 25, 2006, at 15:04:47

Mine logs onto the internet, but I cannot retrieve any mail through Hotmail, nor can my kids log onto any of their buddy chat stuff like MSN, AOL, but an older version of Yahoo will work. However, can't use Yahoo mail.

My computer at my dads will log onto the internet but will not open up any browser like Internet Explorer or Netscape.

WTF????????????? I have no gd life you know, could my f'in computers just provide me with some minor amusement when it's 2 in the morning and I can't sleep because I am wiping a behind or crying my eyes out over things I can't change??????????????????

Windows NT.

I think MY problem is in regards to my Norton Internet Security Software. I have lost my Anti-Virus, and the Password Security Program has f'd up all access to any internet sites requiring a password. I've tried to uninstall to no avail. I probably have a virus because I cannot get into various aspects of Symantec's website, and of course I've never been able to get a freaking phone number to talk to a live person.

I bought this computer in December of 2004. The Norton product came with a 3 month trial. In April of last year I renewed it. Paying for all or so I thought. By November of last year I realized the programs weren't working correctly. Yeah, I know, a long time for that information to sink in to me but I was kinda busy working for a company going down the tubes, losing my job, caring for my dying Dad, having another mini breakdown, yadda, yadda, yadda. Anyway, I was able to get tech support online and thought I fixed the problem. Now however, it doesn't seem to be fixed it seems to be f'd and I am seriously f'in po'd!!!!!!!!!!!!

My computer at my Dad's is using Windowns 98 and of course has been paranormal for years. The earthlink software that came from the internet provider is f'd and after 4 attempts to get tech support I just don't have the patience any more for someone who doesn't speak English. Sorry for possibly offending someone out there from India/Pakistan/Etc, but I am f'ing tired of purchashing a product or service in the middle of the United States and being unable to talk to tech support without having trouble understanding them becuase the tech people ARE FOREIGN!!!!!!!!!!!

It'a all really a conspiracy to get us as throw away consumers to just go out and buy another one. Funny thing that George Dubya doesn't seem to realize is that we can't f'in afford the gas prices, jobs are being lost right and left here in Middle America and the poverty level is rapidly rising at the speed of light. So we can't afford new computers at the drop of a hat and when we have grown accustomed to doing all our personal business, i.e., banking, bill paying, purchasing, etc on the computer, it's a real pain in the backside when they don't work properly.

I AM P'OD!!!!!!!!!!!!

Joan,

Perhaps you could go to some of the tech sites that do free scans for viruses and whatnot. I'm not sure which ones to recommend because those bookmarks died with my last computer.

I'm no computer wiz but after years of trial and error, I always uninstall Norton's if it comes with the computer or anything pre-installed on a trial basis. I've had nothing but trouble with Norton's or any of the big name virus protection.

Instead I go with "Avast" virus protection, sometimes a free firewall like ZoneAlarm (see what's rated highest at cnet or tucows), Spybot, SpywareBlaster, and XoftSpy. (Xoftspy is expensive but it seems to catch some minor stuff spybot misses.) Of course, Spybot and Spyblaster are free.

I also update manually. I've discovered that auto-updating seems to create problems even with windows updates. Avast is the only program I let auto-update and it has worked flawlessly for over a year.

I barely know my way around computers and have made many caveman mistakes. Once I actually body-slammed a noisy computer on the table and it ran quieter after that. Another time I monkeyed around in the windows files and registry reducing the computer to a blank screen with a blinking cursor. A friend (good to have computer wiz friends) wiped my hard drive and reinstalled the OS.

What happens when you try to uninstall Nortons? I've sometimes manually uninstalled the program folders and files if the uninstall program doesn't work.

I wish I knew more.

Verne

Oh boy - Windows NT and Windows 98. Well, I've spent 22 years in the computer biz. Get thee to Windows XP. Not perfect, but installing it as an upgrade should fix all (most) of your problems. You're both way behind in operating systems. You can't expect newer software to work with older operating systems.

Oh, and as far as Norton is concerned, it's commonly known amongst us techies as the biggest PITA in the computer world. Ditch it. If you must have virus software (I don't) try McAfee.
