anyone ever feel bad about themselves because...

of their socioeconomic status perhaps not measuring up to other people's? Most of the time I don't really think about it, but then sometimes I feel like a bit of a loser. Graduate degree aside I've never been someone of "privilege", and sometimes I've been downright underprivileged, struggling and poor. I won't even get into my struggle to remain functional and not debilitated by emotional disturbance/psychiatric symptoms.

Someone was asking me the other day about where I lived, specifically I noticed with questions directed to finding out whether I was from the wealthier part of town. Weird questions I thought. I let them know I am broke. Why does it matter? I don't know.

What difference does it make? for me it's one of the bigger considerations when thinking about having kids, but then why can't I have a family, a real family of my own? why didn't I think about that? why did I screw up so much? When I was younger I didn't think about living this long or really living at all.

........oh boy, I can't keep up :-(

It doesn't matter where you live or how much money you have to me anyway and most people would agree it's the king of person you are. Are you a good person? I feel confident you are. Money is worthless in reguards to a persons character. There is a poster Retired Young. Google him he will say the same in his threads. That all his money won't rid him of depression. Me liking (((Sleepygirl))) too :-) (nm)

I feel bad about myself just about all the time. I don't have a college degree, don't work, and live off VA compensation.

I'm in debt, trapped in the Midwest, and just getting fatter and older.

Something has to give.

Hi sleepygirl,

Keep in mind I can't recall ever being happy, so feeling bad about myself is normal thinking for me.

I base all my self esteem on career and can't get a job that uses my brain and acknowledges my brain with a decent wage. I understand your graduate degree not making you someone of "privilege." When I think "privileged" I see someone who gets a job because they have the right connections, not because of their skills and/or education.

I'm obviously obsessed with keeping up with people who are career successes. My T is always telling me that no one sees me as a career failure- I've been steadily employed my entire adult life. It's me who believes I can't keep up.

Who are you trying to keep up with? What do they have that you really don't? Sorry if I sound like my T, guess she influences me more than I want to admit. LOL.

I go between feeling bad about myself and feeling angry about the narrowmindedness of some "successful" people. I feel bad about myself because I can't do what many others do. But my own 2 brothers, both very sucessful financially, find me unacceptable because of my problems. A few years ago, when I was lucky enough to make $100k for 3 years, I'm sure they were much more comfortable. Now we don't speak.
