Does anyone know anything about these cities?

Posted by Dinah on April 18, 2006, at 9:34:46

Babblemailing would be fine if you don't want to give anything away, or for any other reason.

Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill, NC
Little Rock, AR
Nashville, TN

I've visited Houston and Atlanta enough to have a feel for them. I like the fact that they're big cities, though the traffic looks intimidating. :)

Raleigh/Durham looks rather intriguing from an outside reading of it. Though home prices look a bit scary.

But Raleigh/Durham is one of the areas that my hubby was looking at for work, and it looked like a place we could settle in, from what little research we really did. Nashville is also said to be very nice.

My biggest concern, of course, was moving to what is basically The South -- culture shock, for me, you know. The only experience I've had with people from The South is with my father's family. They're Deep South in Alabama, and in a very small town -- the paved roads end before you get to where they live, for example. Over lunch with several of his relatives, after his death, one of his cousins said to his wife, about me: "Will you look at that? It don't slow her down at all, having to eat with that left hand of hers." I had a hard time with that, for a number of reasons -- mostly just that I grew up with a rule that said one NEVER says anything to draw attention to a guest's table manners. But, again, that was backwoods style southern. I don't have any experience with City southern.

Anyway, sorry for the tangent -- NC was more of a pull for me than some of the other places hubby was looking at, and my mother went to UNC and seems to have liked it well enough. And there's certainly a lot of stuff going on around there. I would think it might be a very invigorating environment.

Good luck, Dinah, whether you stay where you are or move on.

Dinah I know Chapel Hill and the Raleigh Durham Area. Yes they are expensive and lots of things to do and places to go. You would be around four hours from the Beach. Most of the people in the condos we had were from there and weekended there. Lots of shopping. Chapel Hill is very expensive very yuppy. UNC is there top rated University in North Carolina along with Duke which is in Durham. But from what I have been told Raleigh or Chapel Hill are the better of those choices. Spriggy can tell you about Tennesee as that's where she is from. Charlotte where I live is about two and a half hours from Raleigh. Hope this has been of some help to you. My husband said to go to HTV message boards a lot of people asking the same questions about the Raleigh area moving there and answers too. He has a link Maybe with his help I can cut and paste it and send it to you if you like. Love Phillipa

Sorry It is HGTV.com. Go to message boards you can do a search or register and post. This part of North Carolina is not the farm land type very sophisticated people. Being in Charlotte most of the people here have either moved from Florida or New York. One from Florida on each side of us and about 8 more from Tampa, Coral Spings, Boca Raton. Then Maine, Massachusetts, a lot of other Northen States. Between Raleigh and Chapel Hill and Charlotte top scale Medical Care. Love Phillipa ps if you go away from the cities you find what Racer is talking about and before I moved from Connecticut that's what I thought of the South. And no fried or greesy food. Frankly most of the people were either avoiding hurricianes, or couldn't stand the cold anymore. Temperature today in the middle 70's . It's already air conditioning time.

No practical advice, just what I've heard.

Winner is: Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill, NC

I've heard so much about it and some comparisons to Austin. That's a good thing. I'd go there first, no doubt.

Nashville: racial tension(I've heard)

Little Rock, well you'd be in Little Rock. : )

I'm not so up on housing prices so I know that has to be considered.

rofl.

That's exactly what I say about Little Rock. Word for word.

Although I haven't been there since the sixties so I'm trying to keep an open mind. Mainly it's the isolation that bothers me. I'm used to being on a straight line with any number of cities along the coast.

I definitely need to visit there.

yeah i was just gonna say i've heard chappel hill is a nice place.

know of a few people who got to go there on student exchanges and stuff and they said they had a really nice time.

i think the students tend to live out of the chappel hill area (cost reasons) which could be a good thing...

I want to clarify that what I said is based on complete and total ignorance, and that's why I'm trying to educate myself. So please, I meant no offense to Little Rock, or denizens thereof.

I'm getting sort of excited at the idea of Raleigh/Durham. It's a long long way from home, but it doesn't sound all that different in some ways. If it's anything like Austin, so much the better. I know a lot of people who relocated to Austin from here and like it very well, for the same reasons they like N.O.

Housing prices might be a problem though. I'm not sure of the dynamics of housing values here right now. Unflooded house vs. the rest of it.

Thanks everyone! And Phillipa, I'll check out that website.

I really need to look into food. I'm used to having great food everywhere. I get really upset sometimes when away from home because french bread isn't usually the crusty delicious daily pleasure we know here. It's just long bread.

Forgot to add they call the Raleigh Durham area the triade. The Reasearch triangle park and the airport is Raleigh-Durham. They are so close together. And Chapel Hill is included. It reminds me a lot of Connecticut. A lot of joggers or runners, hills, and many many restaurants in the whole area. Love Phillipa
