I got one guinea pig. If they had females, I would have gotten two. But, male guinea pigs fight with each other as they get older. He is still a baby. He is black and brown and I am thinking about naming him Caspian. From the research I did, so long as you can give them much attention then having one will be ok. Since I am home all the time and alone I have much time to devote to this beautiful little guy. He is still a little timid but already ate out of my hand and will let me hold him. I got a baby because I wanted to get him accustomed to me. I have been lonely and since a puppy is not an option right now and guinea pigs are sweet little animals I am now glad to say I have a new addition to my family. I think I am going to name him Caspian. Well thanks again for all the advice.
HUGS to all

He sounds like a sweet little pet. He'll get use to you in no time. Make sure you have a box for him to hide in and some chew things (that are made for the pigs) for him as well. Or last pig died because her teeth grew too long and she couldn't eat. Or something like that. I was away when it happened.

Yeah, he still has to get used to me. It will take some time, but he is just a baby, He nips some but I know it is because he is not used to me cuz he was used to the young fella at the pet store. I am researching online now about the different things I will need to get for him :). Because I wouldn't want his teeth to get too long or for him not to have things to play . There is this wood hidey hole thing they say is good so I will have to order one when I get the chance. They don't sell them at the bigger pet stores. Thank you for the advice.

I thought the name was nice. So if he ends up being a she or something, then it still will sound nice lol. He still has to get used to me, but I am gonna be very patient and loving with him. He is still a little nervous, but I think over time that will ease up. Still a baby.

This little fella is still nervous. So, I am trying to be very careful with him and not to scare him. But, from what I am reading the more handling the more they get used to me. He has nipped a few times. I am very patient though, and read this can be normal for young guineas and when they are getting used to you. But, he is still a sweetie and so cute :)

I wanted so bad to buy one of the other litter, but the pet store guy said they had already been fighting with each other and they are just babies. Females do much better together, but no one had any :( But, I am gonna give this little guy all the love and attention I can and have to get him some more things. Doing more research online, Thank goodness for the internet. I wish you could get a guinea pig. What kind of pets do you like? Well, if not you should definitely get yourself another hamster. So how long did it take you to get them used to being handled? Hamsters are so cute and tiny. I love that cuteoverload site you put up. I showed it to my stepdaughter who is five and she just loved it. Even hubby got a kick out of it. Hope you are doing good.
Peace

In reply to Sleepygirl, how long have your nieces had theirs?, posted by Tanzanite on March 11, 2006, at 23:22:24
about 2 years now...they actually have three (they bought one pregnant and then gave some babies away)
they are pretty comfortable being handled and don't "cry" as long as handled gently
(my nieces say they "cry" if you handle them roughly)
I had a great time with them, and they were very sweet
(the animals and the nieces ;-)

:) Well, I hope they sexed the guineas right at the shop they said they were all boys. They are still babies , but can get pregnant young and that can be dangerous to the females. They insisted they were all he's :) I am glad you had fun with your nieces and the guineas. I never thought I would own a guinea pig but after long thought , for some time now and a dog not being an option at this very moment, I needed a companion other than hubby lol, and something to help with my depression and motivate me some. Blessings to you

I just realized my sentence before wasn't worded properly. When I said, "give him a pet or two for me", what I meant to say was, "pet him a few times for me." LOL
It's nice that you got him a playmate. :-)
