adoption question?

Posted by JenStar on January 17, 2006, at 23:04:45

hi all,
I'm considering adoption. My hubby and I meet all the hypothetical requirements -- stable home, stable salary, no history of violence or crime, no illegal drug use, we're married, in the right age bracket.

BUT -- I also read that agencies get to see the potential adoptive parents' entire medical history. Since I've taken Lexapro off and on for a few years, and sometimes Xanax, for anxiety/depression, do you think this could "disqualify" me from being an adoptive mom?
Would they think I'm awful and weird and psycho and tell me to get lost, that I have no business adopting a baby?

I hope not. I'm stable, kind, nice -- I'd be a GREAT mom. But I'm worried about this.

Does anyone here have experience with this, or know a bit about the US practices?

thanks!
JenStar

I don't have experience with all this, but if they disqualify you for those reasons, half the parents in the world wouldn't be parents! (That may be an exaggeration, but hey, who knows)

Sounds exciting. My friend who adopted three says it's best to be yourself so you can feel as open as possible to show your best side.
good luck,
antigua

Since there are more children w/o homes than ever I think you're wonderful. I used to dream as a kid that I had the money to build a huge log cabin by the lake and adopt as many kids as possible...anyway, mental illness is just that, an illness and that would be discrimination. I'm sure it happens but don't let them. (((hugs)))

Seems there are more people on meds than off them. It shows you recognize a problem and are willing to work on it. More a positive in my opinion. Fondly, Phillipa

I don't think that it would matter that you took meds.

My prayers are with you guys. I remember a time when I wanted to adopt.

Hi Jen,

My husband and I started an adoption process b4 I got pregnant with our 1st child - we had infertility problems. I remember they "asked" about history, but we never had to "show" them anything. Trust me, I would've remembered!

Also, our niece just had a baby, and the baby was adopted. It was an open adoption, she chose the parents. They were not required to share medical history with her, but in the course of getting to know them, the wife told my sister in law that she'd had to have a hysterectomy bec. of cancer, and her husband was diabetic and infertile.

I agree, more ppl on these days than off, and I think it should be optional whether someone had to share that information.

Thanks! » JenStar

hi guys,
thanks for being so supportive and kind. I'm going to start researching this to see what I can find. I talked to my hubby about it, and he said that if we can't adopt, then we're just not meant to have children. But I hope we can do it.
