Curious....

Posted by willyee on November 25, 2005, at 19:44:56

Hey guys i have a quick question im hoping someone might have some insight on.

First let me make note cause it has relavence to my question....i have enough pills to drop an entire horse stable,at the very least a measly 220 pound man.

Saying this,my question is i live in Virginia,a common wealth. One of the big things here are shooting ranges. My best friend is a cop,and i always wanted to apply for a gun permitt here.Im scared now because i know they do some sought of background check, and if it includes mental then obviously they will not allow me one.

Again the thought of self harm with a fire arm makes me wanna url,if i were to become so gone pills would be the way,BUT NONE OF THIS IS AN ISSUE LOL,i just know it prob doesent sound right asking this question on such a group.

Anyway does anyone know if i apllied for a gun permit would mental issues be dug into,i hold no record or any trouble at all with the law.

I just dont wanna make a fool of myself appying.Thank you,

Is this a neutral, not-incredible-need-for concern, kind of post?
You really just want to go to a shooting range?

I know Willyee and yes he just wants to know. Willyee to answer your question I would think they would only check to make sure you don't have a criminal record. Doesn't Hippa provide confidentiality? Now maybe if you'd been hospitalized for doing or threatening physical harm to another it could but I really don't think so come up. Fondly, Phillipa

I also live in VA. Here is what I found online.

For a concealed weapons permit:
http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?000+cod+18.2-308
E. The following persons shall be deemed disqualified from obtaining a permit:
18. An individual who has received mental health treatment or substance abuse treatment in a residential setting within five years prior to the date of his application for a concealed handgun permit.

The actual concealed weapons permit form:
http://www.vsp.state.va.us/Forms/SP-248_Revised_7-1-2004.pdf

Now remember...that is only for a concealed weapons permit. They are much more forgiving with just the plain purchasing permit. You can find a summary of those laws here:
http://www.nraila.org/GunLaws/StateLaws.aspx?ST=VA

This is Virginia remember! This state loves their guns!!! In fact, the NRA headquarters is not far from where I live and if you go into their museum you will see thousands upon thousand of guns...and each one can fire if loaded with a bullet! *shock* It's pretty hard *not* to get a gun here. Kind of like the whole cigarette thing in Virginia.

I wouldn't worry too much about it unless you have a really bad mental health history that involves violence and some sort of criminal conviction. That's the only way I can really see you getting denied.

Im confused from your post it seems like i would not qualify for a concealed permit.Maybe i read it wrong?

Of course it would be nice to have one for self defense since everyone else here does.

And to respond to the first persons post,i have a tub of sodium hydroxide, which is causitc and would burn ur insides to hell, ever see fight club when he poured it on ed nortons hand and it burned it.

Not to even go this direction, but i think it would be GROSSLY horrednous to let a loved one find u after a self destructive stunt with a gun,not that any way would be pleasing to the eye but id much rather find someone in the after math of an over dose rahter than a gun ,uggh the thought is terrable.

I knew this question would be hard to ask lol,but like phillia and the other gentleman in va noted virginia is common wealth, confederate waving gun loving people.

Anyone im also gonna inquire with my friend who just became a police officer,uh hem thanks partialy to me who helped him train and loose 60 pounds to pass.I help friends in fitness training.

ummmmm...I'm of the female gender. ;-)

I don't know your circumstances or history, so I can't really tell you. If you have been committed to a mental health facility within the last 5 years, then I would say you can't get a concealed weapons permit. That doesn't mean that you can't get a gun. You just wouldn't be able to carry it on you at all times.

I living in the DC area. Many of those in southern VA would say I don't actually live in VA...I live in NOVA/DC. hahahaha! I've only been to VA Beach once and only for a couple hours.

OK, this is a general sort of response, not an answer, and I don't claim to any sort of expertise.

First, when I was involuntarily hospitalized after a suicide attempt, I was informed that I couldn't buy a gun for five years. That made sense to me, and I'm in California, where guns are a whole 'nuther story from Virginia. My guess is that seeing a pdoc or a therapist is not what they're looking for -- they're looking at hospitalization, and probably involuntary hospitalization particularly. If you've not be hospitalized, you probably won't come up on any background check as a crazy man. ;-)

And if you're really just wanting to go to the shooting range, how about renting? Many shooting ranges have gun rental, for target practice. Some ranges have classes you can sign up for, that allow you to try a huge range of guns for a reasonable price. If you're just curious about shooting, or about target practice, that might be the way to go.

Just a couple of thoughts...

I'd say go to a shooting range and try out different guns. Do you need a permit for that in VA? They're fun to shoot and you can get it out of your system, kinda like renting a Harley. Besides, if you own a gun there's no where to shoot it unless you live way out in the country.

warn regards ~Jake

He doesn't necessarily have to live in the country. I live in a suburb of DC in the most liberal part of Virginia and there are countless places to shoot...even outdoors. They are just all official shooting ranges. I would rank Virginia, Texas, and Arizona on the same plane when it comes to being a gun loving state. What you are right about is that unless you live or go way out in the country, you will have to go to an official shooting range to shoot.

I'm curious to see what willyee does and what he finds out from his friend. I've thought about going to shoot recently, but don't want to own a gun.

Check out the article I just found....

Mental illness no red flag in gun buying:

State privacy laws often bar health records' inclusion in database

http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/11/26/gun.data.ap/index.html

This is exactly what willyee is wondering. It just doesn't pertain specifically to Virginia. Let me know what you think of the article.
