Pulling off eyelashes

Posted by Deneb on November 20, 2005, at 21:07:00

I just pulled at least 10 eyelashes from my left eye. I do this once in a while. I also sometimes like to pluck hairs off my body with tweezers. Does this mean I have that hair pulling disorder?

Didn't even know there was one and will your eyelashes grow back? Fondly, Phillipa

Yes, my eyelashes grow back. If they didn't grow back, I wouldn't have any eyelashes right now. It is so satisfying for me to pull out my lashes, I don't know why it is so satisfying. I like to pluck hairs off my leg and other areas too.

What is that hair pulling disorder called again? Trichotillomania?

That is what it is called, my best friend had it for most of her life. She had only a small bald patch on her head when we were kids, and she just told everyone that it fell out in that spot, which is another disorder that I can't think of. It begins with an "a". But she was really pulling it out herself.

She told me that she had a much bigger bald patch last year, and then last August I went to see her. I was truly shocked when I saw her; she had practically no hair on the crown of her head.

She went into short-term therapy and found that she did this due to stress. Once she found other ways to deal with her stress, she had less urges to pull. I think you probably are doing this to deal with stress, Deneb. It would certainly be something to discuss in therapy, if you are still going.

My aunt does this too- pulls out her eyelashes.

She has an anxiety disorder (panic attacks) and her doctor related it to her anxiety problems.

She sometimes can go for a while without doing it, but then does it again.

At first, I couldn't understand how this relieved any tension/stress until I realize I do the exact same thing when I bite my fingernails!

be careful - most grow back but not all, If you keep doing it, eventually you'll have thin eyelashes, then few, then very few.
