I thought it was just women once a month, but....

(Hope no women were offened by the title!)

From wikipedia -

"The word is borrowed via French from Latin "lunaticus", which gains its stem from "luna" for moon, which denotes the traditional link made in folklore between madness and the phases of the moon. This probably refers to the symptoms of cyclic mood disorders such as bipolar disorder or cyclothymia, the symptoms of which may also go through phases. As yet there is little evidence for any causal link between phases of the moon and the progression of mood disorder symptoms."

In the previous months I've been picking up on the fact that once a month around the full-moon. My moods change! Sometimes its a pretty good feeling - though sometimes its not so. Can be mild, and then can be alittle more moderate...

Anyway, usuaully if i'm lucky its a pretty good feeling. (I'm bipolar)

Just wondered if anyone else female/male has this at all...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lunatic - Think its safe to say i'm one, but still, I havent learnt to moonwalk yet...

Kind regards

Nick

Nick I'm tired but you've confused me. What does the moon and bipolar have to do with women? Fondly, Phillipa

I think it was more of a play on words. He was meaning that he thought only women went a little wacko once a month (not because of any moon), but now he's realizing that women aren't the only ones. Nick's once a month change just happens to be because of the moon and not hormonal like women.

Am I right Nick?

That's what I thought. But I used to feel a sense of relief. I never went wacko. Fondly, Phillipa

Hi Phillipa,

Basically, I know women (in my experience :) have their time of the month, monthly cycle etc ~ and with that their moods change, sometimes get irritable or depressed and more sensitive etc..

Men (or none that i've met lol) don't have periods.. excuse to the blatantness :-)

With bipolar and moods though, in the past 6 years since I've had mood swings with the highs and lows I've had a cycle which is like clock work, always has been the same which had my moods up for a period of about 4 months - normal for about 2/3 months then down for about 6/8 months. This has been a cycle I could set my watch to the last 6 years.. Things are different now though what with being on medication..

But ~ I've noticed the past few months everytime (Once a month when theres a full moon) for about 3 days my mood changes. It can be very slight, sometimes its been nothing more or less, but there has been a noticeable change usually resulting in me feeling alittle more 'up' than usual...nothing too bad though, quite a good feeling in general.

Just found it interesting that the moon can have this effect ~ I've read that animals tend to sometimes behave differently then too and sometimes teachers notice a difference in children in the classroom.

I guess its normal, nature with its cycles. Theres afew theories why it happens...its known that the moons gravity effects the tides of the oceon I think, perhaps it can have some kind of a force on the chemistry of the brain/body too. I read one theory that also it dates back to cavemen when on a fullmoon maybe it would be a suvival instinct..as the night would be lite up with the shining moon they would be able to hunt for food or something.

Wasn't sure if using the word lunat*c would be civil, but I guess its safe to use if i'm calling myself one ;-)

Kind regards

Nick

Nick, when working as a nurse in psych the fullmoon always meant a lot of admissions to the hospital. So yes I believe it affects are moods some more than others I guess. Glad to hear yours are more positive for you. And guess what heard James Blunt in the grocery store yesterday. It was that song and it is becoming popular here also. Fondly, Phillipa
