Do you think most people can be @ssholes?

Posted by happyflower on November 14, 2005, at 12:52:39

This is something I have been thinking about so don't laugh! I married what I thought was the most caring and well liked person I have ever met and now he is being a total @ss. Sometimes I can be too, so I am wondering if all people can be an @sshole at one time or another. SOme people all the time. LOL
Just look at all the horrible stuff human do to each other all the time. What do you think? Are you an @sshole sometimes? What about most people you know?

I don't think I'd think of it in those terms.

I think everyone has personal challenges to being the sort of person they'd like to think they are. And some people work harder than others at overcoming them. :) But that everyone falls short now and again.

I guess I like to think of the possibilities, and of falling short of the possibilities. Rather than thinking of the baseness of humanity and trying to rise above it.

If that makes any sense.

So I think you are a wonderful unique person who tries to be as loving and giving, as exciting and dynamic, as you can possibly be. But that sometimes you fall a bit short, and need to apologize, make repairs, and accept responsibility for that. Then go on to be wonderful and dynamic again. And the same for your husband, although you can substitute the qualities he's striving for, or you're striving for, in order for it to fit you.

(And you'd best be careful. I'm not sure if Dr. Bob might consider an @ to be a bypassing of the asterisking system rather than the equivilant of an asterisk. Perhaps a clarification of intent and a change in subject line might be prudent?)

please change the @ to *'s I don't want to offend

hi happyflower,
I think most people have huge capacities inside them for good AND *hole-ness, and certain situations (chronic and sudden) can bring out various sides of a personality.

But I also think there are special people who are "locked in" to a way of behavior, be it good or bad. Someone like Mother Theresa, I think, just *couldn't* commit evil. And some people, for some reason, just *can't* stop commiting evil and crimes.

There are a ton of psychological, medical and spiritual debates that could stem from your question!

But in general, for most people, I think that YES - it's possible to be a "hole" on occasion. The trick is to avoid being so, and to keep being positive and nice and supportive.

i married (my now ex) KNOWING it was a bad idea deep down inside (I had no idea what he was doing was called abuse; grew up that way; it was what I was USED to; hated it of course).

I do believe he is the poster-child for Jerk of the world, though. This is the 'man" who told me he wanted to marry someone "taller" I am five feet 2 and a half inches tall. DID HE THINK I WAS GONNA GROW??

This is the man, that after 31 years of (abuse) marriage; told me I didn't deserve respect, and that I had to...EARN it.

Actually, I kept a record (100 things) of the bizarre things he said and did.

> Just look at all the horrible stuff human do to each other all the time. What do you think? Are you an @sshole sometimes?

Nahh......I am very careful (being an "expert" in verbal abuse; I instantly recognize it) about my words, and the effects they have on another human being.

What about most people you know?

Yup, everybody else IS, but not me (LOL, ROFLT, or sumthin like that).......I can say something unthinking (not too often, tho), but when i recognize it, I apologize

"Man's Inhumanity......to man"

EVERYone is capable of ANY----thing. It always makes me crazy (er) when people say things like: Oh, he would never do that (after hearing of a crime or something).

Why is it that people think they know ANYONE? We are lucky if we know ourselves, let alone anyone else.....as in my "ex" said that someone said they just could not believe or understand I would divorce him

Duhhhh, just because he teases and jokes with people DID NOT make him a nice guy.....Sometimes people are so Stooopid.

There, off my soapbox fer now!
Hugs, Ally
