The parish that I live in had power outages for no longer than 5 days in some areas for Hurrican Rita. Most people were out for only one day and many did not have any power outage at all.
There are tons of people who are lying to get money to "replace food that was ruined in the freezer" That is horrible. It is taking funds away from people who need it. I was told by someone that I should go apply for food stamps to get what was ruined. I told them that I could not do that because nothing was ruined. We had a generator.
I heard that FEMA will check with the electric companies and these people who lied will have to pay back FEMA. I hope that is true.

hi Lynn,
it's nice to hear that there are honest, caring people like YOU around. :) Hurrah for you, and for not taking money that you don't need! It's so sad that people are doing that - I think maybe that some people are so jaded, desperate or ruined that they will jump on any chance to get something for free.
Still, there are lots of wonderful examples of kindness coming out of the disaster that we can focus on - all those people volunteering, taking in strangers, donating food and money and shelter. And the people saving others from the flood waters too.
I'm sorry that things suck sometimes. I'm sorry that you have to see those sucky people stealing $$$! But really, it's heartwarming to know that an honest person like you is around. Hopefully your example will make some others think twice and do the right thing. :)

It makes you wonder how many honest people are really out there. Of course, there's no way to get a count since all the liars would lie about it.
I try to focus on the good things I hear about, like JenStar said. There's nothing you can do about the bad people out there, so all you can do is be the sometimes lone person who does the right thing. You have no way of knowing how many people you may influence, and will probably seldom get a thank you. But I'll always remember how complete strangers have helped me when I needed it, like when you break down on a busy highway, or trip and fall (which I seem to do alot), or accidently give someone a $20 instead of a $5. Those kind of people make my day. So I try to be that person who maybe will make someone else's day.
If we only do good deeds expecting recognition or thanks, nobody would ever be nice! I like to think of these selfless good deeds as payment to the people who helped me out. What comes around goes around.

Okay, I know that sounded totally Pollyanna, but it really is the philosophy I try to live my life by.

something that I once heard...It was on a poster I think and it said, "Do a kind deed for someone each day and tell no one". I always remembered that.

I just dont want you guys to think that because I mentioned that I did not lie to FEMA that I was trying to make myself look. I dont know if that is how anyone took it, I just want to make sure.
