What is a shopaholic?
What determines if you are one?

someone who shops alot. Im looking for the actual definition. The dictionary says compulsive shopping or shops alot. But what does *that* mean?

Does it interfere with your daily life. Do you spend money that you would ordinarily spend feeding your kids or yourself.

Hi rain.

A shopaholic is someone who has just purchased a large Longaberger basket to store a dozen previously purchased Longaberger baskets, someone who pays the credit card bills each and every month leaving the rest of the bills for their spouse, someone whose garage sales are by invitation only, someone who turns a two-hour travel time into a four-hour trip due to stops at every antique store along the way, someone who convinces her spouse to paint a room only to discover surprisingly that the furniture doesn't match any more, someone whose shopping bag collection unfolded exceeds the total volume of the home, someone married to Toph.

Hope that has been helpful.

Toph

That reminds me of the book "Confessions of a Shopaholic". I have no idea what it's about. But it looks like a chickie flickie potato chip book by the cover.

By true definition, I would either assume a.) a shopaholic is someone who just plain likes to shop or b.) someone who shops so much that it gets in the way of their daily life and messes up their life.

dang, now you've got me wondering... (nm)

I think I am one, a bit. I don't know the formal def. but I believe it has to do with excessive purchases that are not needed and can't really be afforded, and are bought for the wrong reasons. Or no reason.

I "overshop" like I "overeat." It temporarily satisfies some kind of hunger in me. If I'm feeling down or depressed and hollow, and I go to the store, I ALWAYS overbuy. If I'm in the grocery store, I buy several bags of chips, about 5 frozen things of spinach, lots of different juices, maybe some new potholders, three different kinds of gourmet mustards...stuff that's not even remotely on my list. I think about all the fun stuff I can cook and try to cheer myself up...and can spend a TON of extra money.

If I'm in the mall, I'll go to the girly stores and buy some lotions and soaps and scrubs and stuff...and then go to the bookstore and get some books...

Sometimes, later, when I'm feeling better, I actually go return lots of the things I bought. I have returned books so many times that I'm embarrassed to go in there. I'm trying to curb my shopping impulses!

It's not so bad that I'm buying us out of house and home (ha) luckily. But I think it's an addiction/problem kind of thing.

Do you think you're one? Do you overbuy too?

I am starting to think its a possibility. I buy stuff all the time. I love buying but sometimes I feel really guilty! I buy things I need, don't need and really dont need. I get distracted on my way places if I see something I may want. 40% of my purchases are impulsive. Maybe that isnt too bad. Although, I just returned something I really didnt need! Good for me!!
Does it sound like I am lol

That's not a name you should be calling your husband, Laurie. ; )

I read somewhere about your little guy. Most parents would rather endure the pain for their kids if they could. I hope he's alright.

Oh alright. I have a reserve of other words I can use for him. :-P

Thanks, Toph. He's okay...actually, doing pretty well. He kind of forgets that he even has the purple cast I'll call a deadly weapon. I've only been hit with it once, though, and fortunately, it wasn't too terribly hard and my fat lip lasted less than a day.
