best friend had heart attack!

Posted by pegasus on September 26, 2005, at 9:25:24

Hi all,

I used to post on her a fair bit, but lately I've been just lurking. I had a really rough weekend, and I need to write some things out. I don't think I'm even necessarily looking for support so much as just a place to tell the story, where I know someone will read. So, thanks to anyone who reads this.

I have two really close friends that I went to grad school with, who have remained really close over the years. We were in each others' weddings, and welcomed each others' babies home from the hospital, and have cried over all of life's struggles together over about 15 years. Well, one of them is about to have her second baby, which looks like it may have some birth defects. And she had a horrendous labor with the first baby (2.5 days of labor!), and this one looks like it's going to be even bigger. So she's pretty freaked out, and is checking into the hospital today to be induced. I went over to her house on Saturday to give her a hug and a book that had a good passage I thought she'd like. We're all worried about her.

As I walked into her backyard, she was on the phone leaving a message for me about the other friend. Apparently the second friend was in the hospital with tachycardia (sp?)! Now, we are not exactly elderly. And this friend runs every day and bikes to work and skiis and is a vegetarian, and generally very fit. But it turns out that she has a major blockage in a vessel near her heart, and her heart started really struggling last week, and she could have died! Now she's on all kinds of medications to keep the situation under control.

So, both of my best friends are in the hospital, and I'm terribly worried about both of them. And they're both worried about each other. I think in the end they'll probably both be more or less ok, but the whole thing has discombobulated me. The one with the heart problem is going home, and I'm going to go spend the afternoon with her and her kids.

Thanks for listening.

Peg

Thanks to everyone for your thoughts and prayers. I'm really grateful for them all.

Well, the friend with the heart problem is home from the hospital. But she can't walk much without help. She's wearing a heart rate monitor, which shows her heart rate as good and stable. We talked a lot about exactly what her cardiologist said (I was in the hospital visiting when he came around), trying to figure it out. I *think* it's good news. Apparently, she narrowly avoided an actual heart attack. And he said she'd be able to eventually resume normal activities.

The friend having the baby is in the hospital in labor now. Her water has broken. She sounded really good on the phone. We don't know anything new about the baby yet. I'm just praying and holding my breath and crossing my fingers that that little one is ok.

Thanks again everyone.

Peg
