My pdoc called me yesterday to postpone my appointment with him for today due to a death in the family that would take him out of state. He's was clearly shaken on the phone with me.
Is it okay to send a sympathy card to him at his office? He's very clinically professional and aloof at all times with me. Even when I ask him how he is, he doesn't answer (too personal, I suppose). But I do care about him alot.
What do you think, sympathy card or not?

I had the same situation with my therapist, and decided not to cross those boundaries and send it. But now I think I'm sorry I didn't.

He's a person just like us w/ feelings. it is an innocent kind gesture and i personally see nothing wrong in doing so but would it affect how u feel ur next visit? take care ; )

I think it's okay, but you might want to consider if a copy of your card might wind up in your file.

It might. When I see him next I want to ask him how he really is doing and show that I care, but I'm afraid my concern will be met with no response or a very curt answer.
What the hey...I'm sending him the card.

I think it's OK. I sent mine one when he was sick, and he's all stand offish and professional and aloof. It was all I could do, and I hated him having to be sick. :-(

I've always given my pdoc Christmas presents and a lot of other pts do too. Either a book or a plant. I don't think a card is out of line. You said he sounded shaken on the phone so I think he would be glad to see you cared. Fondly, Phillipa
