I've looked at my closet, and realize that aside from really casual clothes, all I enjoy wearing anymore is long flowing skirts (but not bulky) and simple shell tops. Sounds earthier than it is, since I like them in hot pink and sunshine yellow. I like their softness and the way they feel when I walk. They don't look too ridiculous with tennies. Although I suppose they'd look better with sandals.
I remember back in my young adult career days, I wore almost nothing but shirtdresses. The Karen Alexander type with broad shoulders, a cinched waist, and a circle skirt. Those also felt good when I walked, and showed off my small waist, and looked great on a long torso. I wonder if I still had a small waist, if I'd want to go back to that style. I don't think so. I think it reflected a me that just isn't exist anymore. A competent efficient super-employee. And comfy shoes. Always comfy shoes. But maybe a low heel instead of my current ballet flats.
And back to my very young adulthood. Ok, I dressed to attract back then. Tight jeans and those thin knit tops that were fashionable in the late seventies, early eighties. Designed to show off my assets. Can't imagine what got into me. I've never in my life liked the feel of jeans. I guess the mating drive is strong.
I wonder if I'm going to stay the long flowing skirt type. What will the future say about me? My clothes in each stage have reflected the reality of who I am at that time.
Maybe I'll end up in those long thirties type straight dresses that my grandma used to wear. Maybe with the pintucked front. No, maybe not. I'll never be uncurvy enough to wear pintucks. And an apron. Will I be that sort of grandma?

Isn't it interesting how what we wear says what stage of life we're in? I used to agonize over my clothes when I was in high school and early college--the "right" jeans, tops that covered my butt, no T-shirts, and but never skirts or dresses. Now I wear skirts every day because of work, and they are cool and comfy. But I wear polo shirts too, and the "wrong" jeans and T-shirts when I'm off work. But I have found my man so maybe now the mating urge is not so strong.

hmm.
whats up with people dissing t-shirts?????
(this isn't the first time that has come up)
its not like they are all jumbo xl or anything...
and whats wrong with baby tees???i like jeans.
but... it isn't sooooo hard to get ones that are comfortable and not too tight and looking alright all at the same time. not so keen on tight jeans. bet they are uncomfortable as anything as well...i'm going through a 'i hate everything in my wardrobe' phase. i guess that means i need to go shopping... won't be happening for a while unfortunately.
dare i say what i have...
is mostly jeans and t-shirts???and the trouble is...
the dryer is shrinking my t-shirts.
crap.
i do like baby tees but i also like them to be long enough to sit over my jeans a little. and i like the low cut jeans because they are WAY more comfortable (especially given bloating at certain times of the month etc).
but as they get shorter and shorter i start to get disgruntled.
putting on weight hasn't helped either.
some of my jeans are starting to get a little tight
the last thing you want is fat rolls hanging over them
ugh:-(

and i think for me what has remained constant... is jeans and t-shirts.
cuts change
but jeans and t-shirts remain constant.
i do do pants and polo necks and stuff like that...
but i've never volountarily worn a dress / skirt best i can remember... and i can't imagine that will change anytime soon...

I guess I've never found a comfortable enough pair of jeans. Even when I wore them I couldn't get over how stiff they felt. Wait, I think there was one pair that was relatively soft. Long outgrown. :(
I laugh when I see old pictures of myself in my preteens. I liked really really loud pants. :) With great big old mod flowers or bold stripes.
I don't think I have really strong feelings about tshirts one way or another. I like to buy ones to remember events or places. But I don't wear them all that often. Not because there is anything wrong with them. It must have something to do with how they feel. Almost everything I wear is because of how it feels. I'm a sybarite I guess.

The skirts I used to wear were very work-like. I don't think I could get hired in my current skirts. They usually almost reach the ground (the better for no nylons).
I think it reflects the fact that I really don't think of myself in work terms anymore. I really do think my clothes reflect how I feel about myself. So maybe I think of myself as a free spirit now?
Snort. Guffaw.

Ah... You can get them in different fabrics. I have a pair I brought last year that are really soft. Otherwise... The only thing that softens them up is lots of washing. They soften with age. But you can get them preaged too. Prefrayed even. Or preshot with a shotgun or whatever ;-)
And they used to sit really high up around your waist. Which is really uncomfortable - especially when they are stiff. Hipsters kind of sit lower down under your stomach. So they are much more comfortable - even if they are stiff.
But it is hard finding fitting t-shirts that are long enough...

:-)
I'm quite conservative really.> It must have something to do with how they feel. Almost everything I wear is because of how it feels. I'm a sybarite I guess.
Yeah. Thats where I'm at at the moment. Nothing feels right. Probably because I have gained weight. I'm really unhappy about that. Really unhappy. But then what do I expect living off coke and chips and lollies etc?
Mind you, I used to live off coke and chips and lollies etc and wasn't as big as I am now...
Its because I can't walk so much. I used to powerwalk everywhere which kept me a little bit toned.
Probably getting older too...
Go through phases of being mortified and promising myself I'll never eat again...
Then trying to eat healthy...
Then thinking that it really isn't worth the bother.
I think I should do something about my food issues one day... One day...

It's getting older, I think. I don't half what I used to and I weigh, well not quite twice as much, but close enough.

whats really scarey to me is how much my body has deteriorated over the past 3 years... after my 'accident' admittedly... but still, i worry what it'll be like in 5 years, and 10 years, and 15 years...
:-(

Well, I can tell you what it will be like in fifteen years if you don't watch your diet and exercise regularly.
But I'm afraid I'd just depress you.

Hmm...
I have family history of diabetes to worry about too...
But I'm fairly confident the lung cancer will get me first ;-)> But I'm afraid I'd just depress you.
I'm depressed enough about it as it is.
Exercise is a hard one for me...
I used to love walking...Food.
Food is the problem :-(
Dunno why I've gone towards sweet things...
It used to be carbs...

Hi again, Dinah! I think long flowy skirts and shells sounds like a wonderful uniform.
I'm pretty much stuck on t-shirts, knee-length casual skirts, and European sandals or mary-jane flats. I used to prefer long straight skirts but they've become hard to find. The last one I bought I got at JC Pennys which was the only store behind-the-times enough to sill have them.
I'm trying to accept that I may never wear jeans again. With me it's a tradeoff between thin thighs and boobs. I have to choose one or the other-- there's no weight where I can have both. Without thin thighs I don't feel attractive in jeans.
I'm trying to expand my color selections. I'm not quite ready for pink and yellow, but I've purchased a couple of bright t-shirts lately. Anything but black, gray, or denim is a stretch for me.

Thank heavens for catalog shopping. :)
Although there's a slight recent, probably summertime, trend for the type of skirts I like.
Sigh. I can't wear short skirts. Not only am I knock kneed, but I have a shortened something or another tendon in my foot that causes me to toe-walk. So my calves are enormous. People used to stop me and ask me if I were a runner. With the added weight, I assume they now realize I'm not. Capris are the fashion craze from h*ll to me.
And for the same reason I step right out of sandals. :)
Until I had my son, I was incredibly lucky in distribution. No matter whether I was 118 or 135, I looked more or less the same. Wide shoulders, nice generous breasts, a relatively small stomach in comparison and a rear that you could sadly balance a glass on. Straight back like a bustle. Now I've developed an apple shape, and I don't think I'll be able to change that. :(
Oh youth. And old rotten age.

hi Dinah,
this is a really interesting post! I've changed, too. My usual "uniform" (not mandated of course, but what I usually choose!) is dark pants and a nice, slightly form-fitting blouse. (Formed enough to show waist and boobs, loose enough not to accentuate any fat rolls at the tum!)I like dark jeans or black/brown pants that flare at the bottom a bit, but are not bells. I like blouses that are feminine but not too "fluffy." I like to pair it with a necklace & earring that match, and either sandals or flats that match too.
BUT...when I was younger and thinner...I used to LOVE wearing shorts to show off my muscular legs, and I also loved those knitted tank tops or other tank tops. I liked pretty short-skirt dresses. And I looked good in them, darn it all! (Wish I still did...)
I used to have wild and crazy colored hair; now it's normal color and shape.
I hope as I get older I stay stylish - even when I'm 90! I know orthopedic shoes are probably comfy, but I hope they start making them in more attractive styles and colors by the time I reach the age where I need them!
I guess I'm a conservative but (hopefully) stylish dresser. If I were thinner, I'd probably be more daring.

I'm a quirky dresser, I think. :)
I hate the effect age has on all the various parts.
This is the end of the thread.
