Is everyone on an anti-depressant?

Posted by lynn970 on August 21, 2005, at 20:47:08

In the small Louisiana town in which I live, almost everyone is taking some kind of medicine.
prozac, effexor, etc.

Is this the only place where almost everyone is on some type of anti-depressant?

Is it the cajun food that is making us depressed? ha ha. lol

I don't know.

Oftentimes I look around at the students in class with me and I wonder if other people are on medications.

I'm not sure whether or not there are a lot of students like me who need counseling and have problems.

Well... I think the general spirit is that they are over prescribed.

People think of them as 'happy pills'.
Feeling a bit down?
Take an anti-depressant.
Like how people take multi-vits as part of general health improvement or something.
Improvement in performance.
Still...
They aren't so physically addictive
(though I'm not so sure about effexor...)
;-)
And the drug companies make a bomb, I suppose.
Oh, and then there is the free stuff that clinician's get for prescribing particular varieties to x amount of people.

Ahhhh cynacism
(however you spell that)
Makes me feel better :-)

Makes you feel kind of worthless again doesn't it?, to find out that everybody is taking an antidepressant. If everyones depressed, then nobody is depressed or so logic persuades.

I'm taking Lexapro, 20 mg/day. My Dr. told me that I'd be surprised if I knew exactly how many people take it or something similar for depression or anxiety -- I was worried about taking a med, and she was trying to reassure me. So I think it's pretty common! I know that one of my friends back home is taking Lex too, and I would never have known, except that we both started talking & disclosed it to each other. It was nice not to be alone.

I tend to hang out with teachers/educators; and I must say, the majority of them, are all on anti-depressants. It tends to run rapid where I'm from also....Feel your sorrow!!!!

Its extrordinarly disturbing. Its like Brave New World. Although Huxly didn't anticipate soma poop out.

With the few people I tell (I would NEVER tell a friend I was on drugs) that they could just as well be taking them too.

Can you imagine whats going to happen when they finally make that discovery that they cause brain cancer or something. Thee quarters of the world will simultainiously be trying to disconinue their antidepressant. Everyone will be irritable and b***chy all at once. It will be mass panic and anarchy the likes of which have never been seen.

Lets just say you'll want to stay off the express way going to work.

Acutally you probably won't go to work.

Hey linkadge, I am feeling irritable right now!!
lol

I would like to quit my job. My husband seems to blame it on my medicine. People like to blame the medicine or lack thereof. Anytime I am angry, "did you take your medicine?" They act like you cant have a bad day.

Sorry, just venting.

Ok several weeks ago I had an anxiety attack that lasted for days. No eating, unable to function, and constant crying.

My parents were worried about me. I woke up in a hosipital. I was there Saturday, Sunday, and half of Monday. I think they were afraid that I would kill myself.

Today I told my husband that they can come get me and put me in jail because my child is not testifying against anybody. (I am afraid for her safety)

He told me that I was gonna have a record and that I already have one because I went to that hospital.

Can anyone anywhere ever hold it against me because I was in one of "those" hospitals?

Lynn, take a moment away from everyone else. Sit down, relax and pray. Pray for the strength to make it another hour, day, night without overly stressing yourself. Pray for those people that you are so mad at. Pray for your family/friends to understand how you are feeling. Even though you had a rough moment a while back, it doesn't mean that it will happen again. Your husband/family member sounds as though he is not listening to you. Asking if you took your medicine today: a)is not his buisness b)should not be taken into account if you had a bad day away from home; and c)is a poor start to understanding how you feel. He sounds as if he needs meds...(venting sorry). Anyway, don't let the stress of today bring you back down the path of yesterday (a few weeks ago). Whatever has occurred with your daughter or what she is involved in sounds kind of serious. You need to be strong for her. Showing her your stressful state will not help her or yourself. Whatever the situation may be, you as a parent have the right to not allow her to be interigated or what have you, unless ordered under a court of law....
Do you have a friend/coworker or someone who you may call for prayer, to talk, vent, yell.... Maybe it would be best to consult someone else rather than those closest to you (at home) b/c they don't always understand...

For some reason, I don't believe that all cajuns talk, speak, or write as you just have.????? I may sound a little witchy right now, but is this a joke against Lynn from Louisiana? If not, then forgive me; I may have misread/interpreted the response.
