Thinking of buying a digital camera

Posted by Deneb on August 14, 2005, at 23:59:53

I really want to take more pictures of my hamster, but it seems kind of silly to spend about $400 just for this purpose!

Does anyone know of any good digital cameras? I've forgotten most of the research I did when my sister bought her camera.

I want it to have a lot of options, not just a point and shoot camera.

I LOVE my digital camera!!! You can use it for all sorts of stuff, not just Hammie. :-) I love that I can see pictures instantly, alter them slightly (reduce red eye, etc), have storage for more than 375 pics (on the memory card) and e-mail them instantly. I have a Kodak EasyShare CX7430, which I purchased on the Kodak website. It was "refurbished" which brings the price down quite a bit, but still has the same warrenty as a brand new one, and is basically the same since it's been worked on by Kodak.

It has a lot of features--zoom, landscape, portrait, nighttime settings, and a decent zoom. I can even shoot short videos with it. The whole thing--camera, shipping, and storage card--cost me $175. It's a good beginners camera, but still has enough features to keep you busy. If you really like digital you can always upgrade later.

I got a cheap Kodak one a year or so back. Never had a camera before but always wanted one so I just got the cheapest / simplest one I could find to see whether I'd get into it and make use of it. At this point in time I have exactly one photograph that I've taken that I like. But then I've only played with it a couple times. Still have some pics from Napier that I haven't viewed yet.

I wish it had a zoom though. Officemate said it wouldn't be a problem 'cause you can zoom with software but it degrades the pic quality (which isn't the best in the first place) and also the angle is all wrong...

Zooms are good :-)
But then I guess it depends what kind of pics you want to take...

Optical zooms don't degrade the quality of the image, digital zooms do.

I love my old Kodak DC290

Hard to think of a digital camera being old, but it's huge and clunky next to those new ones. And it has trouble digesting photos with the larger memory disks.

But it captures colors beautifully.

Yep, I think I'll set aside about $100 for memory. The memory that is included usually only lets you take like 5 pics or something lol.

I want to take some pics of the moon through a telescope one day. I want to stitch together a mosaic of the moon. Anyone know of any good photo editing programs out there? Right now I have Adobe PhotoDeluxe 2.0.

I want the camera I buy to have a manual shutter speed (?), I want to be able to take pictures in low light conditions. It should have a thingie for a tripod too.
