What's the diff betw mental illness and disorder?

Posted by Deneb on August 5, 2005, at 23:52:56

Is there a difference?

I tend to think of myself as having a mental disorder and not illness.

To me, the term "illness" suggests that something is inherently wrong with a individual which causes that individual significant difficulties regardless of whether there are interactions with other people.

The term "disorder" suggests to me that the individual is different in ways that cause that individual and others significant difficulties and these difficulties arise only through interactions with others.

What do others think about this?

LOL, at first I posted this using the word "systems" instead of "individuals." I wanted to be as general as possible and include complex non-living systems, but my post started to sound really strange.

Hi Deneb,

Thats pretty interesting you mention that, i've wondered the same thing myself.

Also, you hear some people say mental condition....and then mental disease - I really don't like hearing 'disease' But, then I read somewhere that the word disease, basically means when your are 'at ease' you know, your relaxed at fine. And the oppisite to that is dis - ease. I'm not very at-ease when I feel really unwell. LOL...but at the same time, I dont like to think i've got a mental dis-ease. Slightly confusing there! lol

Disease, condition, illness, disorder. All pretty dull. I think we should invent a new term that sounds more, interesting if thats the right word lol

Kind regards

Nick
