How Many Work and How Many Stay Home?

Posted by Phillipa on July 24, 2005, at 22:06:04

Another question. How many of you work, and how many of you stay home during the week? And if you stay home why? Is it by choice or because you have to? Fondly, Phillipa

I work, but only because my family made me work. I didn't have to do anything...work came to me.

I'm not sure I would have a job now if they hadn't made me work. I'm not sure I would have had the motivation and courage to go find a job.

I do both! I am lucky enough to have a job where I can work out of my home part of the time. So I'm home AND working, which is very cool. And then part of the time I work out of the home, too.

I used to have a full-time, or rather full-time-PLUS job as a manager at a large corporation. I quit to start my own business in a more artistic realm, which is a much poorer venture financially but richer in intangible rewards. And luckily my dear wonderful love of a husband doesn't mind supporting me while I try this out!

Eventually if I don't "make it big" (so to speak) I may have to go back to corporate world. But for now I'm giving my new thing a shot and enjoying it while I do.

However, I have had some snide comments from random people. Many friends are quite supportive, but I have gotten the occasional "it must be so NICE not to have to work", said in a rather accusing voice. I just say brightly, "It IS nice!" and smile a big old smile right into their jealous beady little eyes. People like that don't understand how many hours I pour into my new venture, even if it doesn't make too much $$ yet. And it IS nice, anyway. :)
I consider myself very lucky.

I stay home, half out of choice and half because I've been extremely depressed.

I.

I stay at home, but not exactly by choice. I am not physically able to work more than 20 hours a week, and I have had many bouts of major depression. I do not seem to be able to hold a job.

The right job and the right circumstances for a few hours a week would be beneficial. But such a position doesn't exist.

I stay home since my daughter was born. If we lived near family who could keep her, I would work, at least part time. But living where we do, it would take almost all I could make to pay for daycare...

I agree with JenStar. It IS nice. I have had folks give me that same "must be nice" comment. And I do feel very lucky it has worked out for us.
