Well this can't be too bad

Posted by messadivoce on July 19, 2005, at 0:25:04

My new job, I mean. Today, actually, was my first day and it happened to fall on orientation day for new staff. So I sat for 7 hours and tried to absorb info about HMOs (yay) and risk-management (lift with your knees and for god's sake don't throw away alkaline batteries) and a retirement plan (that I'm too young to enroll in) and who to call when my computer goes crazy.

I did get to see my workspace though, and it's nice and big, and I have my own phone lines (2!!) and voicemail and keys for my file cabinets and the office itself. And permission to raid the office supply cabinet (which I need to do cause all I've got is a pad of mini sticky notes and 2 pens). If you can't tell, this makes me feel important in a kooky sort of way.

This may not seem like much. But for someone who 4 months ago was on the OTHER side of the desk registering for classes from the person who retired whose position I now have, well, it's sort of surreal.

Let's hope I can actually do the job.

Of course you can do it! You're going to be wonderful.

I'm very excited for you.

Not kooky at all about the feeling important...after many years in the USAF, and all kinds of supplies and computers (and people..!) given to me to be responsible for...I still always felt sort of special and important and good about myself (that's a good thing!!) when I got new keys, office "stuff," permission to do things, and people to train. You sound quite sane about it all :-)

Too bad I'm not your boss/supervisor/trainer/mentor.

I've been known to be nice, funny, kind, forgiving and a da*n good trainer!

'course to get all that you must put up with quirky, forgetful, talks too much, needs you to keep me straight, and small absences from the office for T. appts., of course! :-)
(pssst...when you work for me, it's even okay to rant sometimes, away from the public..AND to {gasp} cry at work)

Just try to keep in mind mistakes are EXPECTED from new folks and perfection is NOT the goal! Be who you are here and people will respond well. Those who don't....well, remember they are all carrying their own "stuff" around and it's likely NOT about you....

Hope your boss and co-workers are good ones...keep us posted.

Awww 10der, I wish you were my supervisor!!!

My boss right now seems okay. I had a 40 minute mtg with her today and we didn't finish so we will continue tomorrow. She was just making clear all my responsibilities and expectations b/c there is a 90 day evaluation period for all new employees. She was saying all this stuff and I was nodding and being professional and unphased, while inside I was going "EEEEEEEEK!!!!"

I wouldn't be scared of her if she had more than a trace of humanity. Basically, I am afraid of messing up. My boyfriend has assured me that I probably will make a mistake and the world will go on. Hmmm.

Yeah....but realistically...we might both get busted for talking too much....:-)

Still sounds completely normal to me. Probably she is trying to impress certain things upon you, to see how you respond to serious responsibilities and high expectations, not in a creepy, "mind games," sort of way, just because it's part of her job to do that. That's something I can't do - not well, anyway. I tend to downplay stuff, and reassure folks they'll do great, that things aren't too hard, and I'll be there to help them, etc. Been told that's too touchy-feely, but...oh, well, it's my way...

Ahh...a very wise man, that one. I do believe I like him. You should probably keep him ;-)

This made me laugh. Funny, it made me remember a snap of my past.

Use those stickys liberally to help organizing thought, process or whatever.
I had a boss once who flew in once every two weeks for one day to give me assignments. When I came in the next morning my office was thickly covered with stickys. Couldn't have done without them, they were like little assistants.

You'll do great, careful not to get tied in a knot with those two phone lines.

Way to go! I'm glad you're so excited about the job and your workspace. You CAN do it or you wouldn't be there. You probably will make a mistake or two, doesn't everyone?! I tell my kids if they don't make mistakes, how are they supposed to learn! And yes, life will go on, and you will be fine.

Good luck!

First week down

Okay so far. I need to get a plant or something for my desk. My boss is really anal (to put it mildly) and among the 10,000 instructions she gave me, she said not to have an excess of pictures, plants, etc. I guess when we start to get lots of students coming in, they have been known to lean over the counter (the desks are sort of below a counter) and fiddle with stuff on your desk if it catches their eye. Geez! I could get a venus flytrap! A carnivorous plant!! If they stick their finger in it, it could get chomped right off! That would teach them.

Candy?

A dish of candy is an effective trap. Eyes will zero onto target, get distracted from the rest on your desk. Some with really difficult to open wrapper. Lollipops with sticky cello that peels off in tiny shreds.........
