Mac vs PC

Posted by alexandra_k on July 17, 2005, at 17:57:48

Any thoughts?
I'm a PC user myself.
Have had people trying to convert me to Mac for a while now...
What do people think?

Used to have a Mac at home before it imploded. Nothing beats them for graphics work etc and the OS is still better than Windows as is the new Browser.

Until the newest line I wouldn't have recommended them because most peripherals had to be Mac specific but now they're pretty generic USB connectivity and the file compatability and exchange is much better/simpler. iMovie and iTunes etc are brilliant and easy to use too. Be warned though you'll pay quite a bit more than for an equivalent speck PC. I also believe that the newest Macs will be Intel just like pcs. Loved mine while I had it.

My roommate has a Mac, I have a PC. I use her Mac occasionally to check out websites that I have been working on, and sometimes just to browse the web. What I haven't been able to figure out though is how to add a network printer, or to share files between PC and Mac. Those tasks seem much easier to me on a Windows platform.
My roommate is a graphic designer, and the things she can do with that Mac are truly impressive. I'm not going to say which platform is better...I think that they are both better at certain tasks, and both have their own market share. I think we would lose something if the world went all PC or all Mac.

Something that is both a pro and a con at the same time is that it is much harder to find / download games for them.

I had one in Australia (an old one which didn't help) and couldn't seem to play any decent online games. Its about then that I found Babble, actually ;-)

I have a powerbook and its great! Much nicer to use than PCs. And everything is just plug in and it goes! Also you don't have to worry about virsus etc, as I believe they don't write them for macs? Trouble is, I don't have any money at the mo to actually buy any progams for it, but hey.

I got itunes with my ipod - and it is really great.

I used a mac in oz. it was a really old one though, and i wasn't fond of it at all. only one mouse button. not happy with that. but they seem to have solved that one now.

> Be warned though you'll pay quite a bit more than for an equivalent speck PC.

yeah. i don't know if id ever convert enough to buy one myself - but sometimes you get an option at work.

>I also believe that the newest Macs will be Intel just like pcs.

Intel???
(I don't know very much about computers at all)

hello. they do seem to take a bit of time to get used to. you can tell the pc users who are using a mac for the first time. they are the ones running up and down the hallway yelling 'my computer ate my floppy disk / cd rom'. there is something really counter-intuitive to a pc user about dragging those things to the trash to eject them from the system...

heh heh.
i wasn't too keen on i-books till i saw my flatmates over the summer. verrrrry nice. verrrrry expensive too though, so i guess i'd want to see what you get on pc equivalent...

my supervisor in oz got given one by the research school. i swear he used to sit there and pat it with a huge grin on his face. i think he loved his mac too :-)

?? My comp does that too.

>Also you don't have to worry about virsus etc, as I believe they don't write them for macs?

i'm not sure... i don't know much about computers so i might be just talking out of my *ss but i had heard... that viruses were invented by mac... um... software developers maybe? they were supposed to be practical jokes. you'd write one and send it to other people in your office and see whether they could solve it or whether you had to tell them how.

i don't think macs have as much of a problem with viruses though...

i worry about microsoft. i worry about the viruses being the best advertising / incentive of all to subscribe to norton antivirus live updates... hmm...

>Trouble is, I don't have any money at the mo to actually buy any progams for it, but hey.

yeah. programs are meant to be expensive too i remember...

still... all i do is word processing and babble and the odd powerpoint. like to learn how to use ppt a bit better actually...

I use a Mac exclusively at work and a PC at home.....My feeling is the Mac OS in general is more intrinsicly intuitive.(except for that quirky thing where you have to throw an icon in the trash to get your CD Rom to come out of its tray.) It is the ONLY computer platform IMO for doing professional graphics and audio video work. The new Mac OS 10 is more reliable than anything I've ever used. Macs are generally considerably more expensive than "equivalent" PCs and until recently Mac software was expensive and hard to find. As someone stated earlier, the new Macs are essentially cross platform so you can run pretty much any current software for either platform...also for older Macs there is a program called Virtual PC which basically turns your Mac into a PC. I *have* noticed certain web sites are not particularly Mac friendly.....I better shut up now...the techno nerd part of my multiple personalities seems to be taking over.

peace out
kid

:-) thanks for responding.

Its funny how when you ask this kind of question the mac enthusiests are quick to jump on board with praise for their macs, but the pc people don't really..

Good to know they have improved compatability. If I get the option I might just switch over.
