loss of memory--link to depression?

Posted by smokeymadison on July 4, 2005, at 16:03:27

i feel like every time i come out of a major depression, i have lost some more of my memories of the past. i feel like i have forgotten myself and those i love. i have to relearn everything. is there any scientific basis for feeling all of this? does any one else feel like this?

The closest I can come to having an answer is that when I am in a major depression, I notice far less of the world around me. News, family events, the whole episode can be a big blur afterwards. Perhaps it's partly a function of the illness so we don't recall how unhappy we've been, too? Though I can certainly remember enough about my depressions to know I don't want to relive any of them. But I haven't lost previously existing memories.

I feel like huge chunks of my life are missing. The worse the depression, the less I remember. I don't really remember the couple of years after we lost a daughter. Your body's (God's?) way of protecting us from reliving it?

My short-term has been pretty much eliminated with meds, but hey, I feel better about it! ;~}

My understanding and experience is that depression and meds can really do a number on short-term and long-term memory. During better times, I find that some of the good memories come back, but I don't always remember some of the months where I was really depressed. There are just huge holes there. Not that I really want to remember those things anyway...
