Can you help settle a situation that has come up on PsychoBabble? What does LOL mean? Some say it means Lots of Luck, some say Laugh out Loud, Lots of Laughs, and Lots of Love. What is the true meaning. Thanks Phillipa

I always thought it was laugh out loud.
Sometimes words (or acronyms) have more than one meaning or sense. So 'bank' has at least two senses / meanings. There is money bank and there is river bank. Maybe LOL is like that...

Hi Phillipa,I used to think it meant "lots of laughs" but then someone corrected me and told me it meant "laughing out loud". Most people use it to mean something to do with laughing so I think we can safely narrow it down to that and understand what the poster had in mind.

I agree with Alexandra, but I think Laugh(ing) out Loud is the most popular and common.
Check this out if your really want to be overwhelmed....if anyone tried to use even half of these regularly, there would be no more actual words, we'd be in the Land of All Acronyms, All the Time (LOAAATT), and I personally, would have a massive headache....but, it's a great reference site. Enjoy! :-)

I never knew there were so many! It almost reminds me of stenography. You probably don't remember it, but I took it in high school. I could write l20 words per minute all with little squiggly lines! Fondly, Phillipa

I tend to think it means 'laughing out loud', unless the context suggests 'lots of love'.
