Hairy Hand - Ew!

Posted by TamaraJ on February 23, 2005, at 15:34:24

Please don't laugh, but I have a question for anyone who has ever had a cast on their arm/hand. When you had the cast removed, did you notice that your arm and hand were hairier? Man, my hand is starting to look like a f*cking Chia pet. It's gross! I think I am going to have to shave! Ew! I feel like a cross between Cousin It and Thing. (Ok, so I'm exagerating a bit, but it still looks gross to me.)

Ok. So the hair looks worse because it is darker (having not seen the sun) and (no offense intended) but your arm is probably slightly pale and withered...

It'll come right.

If you shave it it will only grow back prickley and darker (having never seen the sun).

Your Chia pet picture was hilarious.

My first thought when I read this was lack of the sun as well. I do hope that is what it is? just don't get it wet....just in case. :)

I think that TamaraJ's interpretation is probably the correct one but I do remember reading about a few cases of increased hair growth on the skin over a healing broken bone. I think the explanation of this phenomenon was that the injury and subsequent healing of the fracture cause increased blood flow to the area, and this increased blood flow/circulation brings more nutrients and whatever factors cause hair growth (such as hormones, etc.) to the area. Increased hair growth doesn't happen in everyone, however, so I think it just appears to have increased because your skin is pale now.

Thanks everyone. I'll just chill. I am sure it is just a temporary thing. It just looked weird because I am fair-skinned and fair-haired. I am just over-reacting. Get a life Tamara! Anyway, a friend of mine offered to come over and braid it if it gets too long!

If you really can't cope you could get something to bleach the hair.

To lighten it a little...

Im sure that is what it is, but can you show it to anyone for a second opinion?

That's a good idea! I have my follow-up appointment with the surgeon in a couple of weeks, so I'll just ask him to confirm that it is normal. I did talk to a friend of mine, and she told me that when her mom had a cast removed, she experienced the same thing. So, it's likely just a temporary thing. Thanks Rain.
